Best synthetic oil
I heard a rumor that it may go to 50 degrees up here next week, may have to change the oil a little sooner than I wanted to.I was using Mobil 1 10w 40 synthetic cause I heard it was a little better for wear reduction and to keep the beast running a little cooler in the summer.I see people talking about Royal purple,Amsoil, respol, etc.,is there any difference between them,I've been getting the 5 quart Mobil 1, synthetic at wal mart for $21.50 with a 10% discount(the wifey works there),I see some of these hotty totty synthetics priced p to $15.oo per QUART!I'm running a stock '82 GS 750E.Is it worth the switch and which is the best?Of course if you go to their web site it says they're the best, what does everybody think?Tags: None

Rotella synthetic is a good choice. It has about 1/3 more zinc than that Mobil 1 auto oil, which makes it superior for use in a motorcycle.
FYI, synthetic oil won't reduce wear or temps in the engine, unless you are talking about melt down type temps. What synthetic oil will do is hold up better to shear forces, such as in the transmission gears, so it will last longer in your engine before breaking down - you can extend the change interval to help offset the higher cost.Last edited by Nessism; 02-09-2011, 11:06 PM.Ed

Rotella? Isn't that a type of pasta? Why would I put that in my engine? Ha HA! Just kidding. Thanks for the very helpful response.Sorry, I won't post another weather related thread until you guys say its o.k. jeez..

Rotella is good. If it does get to 50F and you take the bike out, it will likely be subjected to a constant salt-spray, from melting snow & road salt.....best to hose it down & dry before returning it storage, or the salt will do a number on any exposed metal. I resist the temptation, rather than bother with all this.'82 GS1100E
