    Major 1100 Kat rebuild...last post.

this is a bottom to top rebuild of an 82 gs1100 katana with gsxr forks and rear wheel.

    hi guys,

I just started my build of my 82 1100 kat. I siezed or should I say melted a cam 2 years ago and am finaly getting around to business. I had a lot of trouble finding a head since the cam toasted it too.

I have fitted a 93 gsxr front end and wheels. rear is 180/55/17 on my stock swingarm..it fits with some futsing. the jugs are being bored out to 1166 right now and I am deciding on cams. A dyna ignition and rev limiter has been fitted and the crank has been indexed, welded and balanced. So has the clutch basket..welded that is with a heavy duty backing plate. Port and polish is next with radius valve job. Then comes the top end oiling kit and manual cam chain tensioner. Not to mention the 750 oil pump drive gear for a little more presure. Oh I forgot the smoothbores and a vance and hines header.

Well thats enough for now don't you think?

The engine and frame have been powder coated and await assembly.

If any of you vets out there have any suggestions I am all ears.

    cheers!

On the top end oiler kilt. I heard that you don't need it unless you put in oversized studs. This is because the bigger studs reduce the flow of oil to the head.

    Good luck with your proj.

      Oiler kit cannot hurt.

Cooling the oil may be more of an issue with all that work. Make sure you have a decent sized oil cooler. Engine life will be a lot better.

I hope you have put some money into the suspension side of things...the rear shocks need to kep up with the rest of the bike!

      Have a fun time!

          kat 1100 rebuild

If you are running a 180 series tire with a 5.5" wheel you will need to offset the countershaft with a 5/8 offset kit.

I just worked out the wheel numbers to center and mounted it. the wheel is 3 1/4 inches from tire edge to outside edge of swing on both sides.

I have posted a spec drawing at:
            www3.telus.net/stunts/pics

My offset for counter cog is 14mm or .55 inches. The stock spacer on the chain side is 28mm now it is 14mm. I have reduced the offset 2mm more by reversing the chain ring bringing my final offset to 12mm or .47 inches.

using the gsxr sprocket hub the offset is 5/8 but I used the stock gs1100 sprocket carrier which I found to be narrower than the gsxr's by almost 3mm. Total I dropped just under 3/16. That leaves just over 7/16 or about .47 inches.

Hi there, have a Katana myself and it would be interesting to see that drawing but the link doesn't work 8O Also, you say you have '93 Gixxer runing gear, do the UPSD forks clear the top fairing or do you have to modify it to clear? Sounds like a cool project you got there, how 'bout some pics???

I posted some more pics showing bettier the fit of the tire check it out

and I know I have to clean that ugly white paint of the wheels. I am going to pollish the rings and paint the spokes black.

                    Yeh Dink,

it is a complete 91 1100 gsxr wheel except for the sprocket carrier which is gs1100 stock. It is 2mm narrower and helps limit my offset.

True, but it doesn't necessarilly help either - that was my point.

Don't forget....I had a cam melt down already...I don't want to risk all this work and money to

                          "it MAY not help"

Why take the chance when its easy to install, cheap and looks kool?

Man do I hate doing wheels. The paint was melted into the medal. It was like removing chrome. but it is done....two days later.

Do the "phatter" GSXR forks fit without needing to cut the fairing?
