    Mods For 130hp From 82 GS1100E?

To all of the performance guru's out there - what is the most reliable, cost effective way to get to 130rwhp from an 82 GS1100E? I am thinking of an 1166cc Wiseco kit (10.25: 1 compression), 36mm Mikuni flat slide carbs, hotter cams, light port clean up and a 4-1 exhaust system. Will this get me to 130hp or not?

It is for a street bike, so it must run on premium pump gas (92 octane locally) and start every time, idle OK and not overheat instantly in stop and go traffic.

    What say you?

darn close if not more. Slightly over sized valves shorter guides to go with the hot cams and most definitely slotted cam gears. you will get gobs more power from just degreeing stock cams.
While you are doing that much souping i believe you want to use 750 oil pump gears and a top oil kit. I don't know enough about the kit but lots of our tribe use them. do all that and you might even beat a V ROD.
OOPS i forgot the 530 chain mod. there will be many more suggestions. I just happened to [pop on when you posted the question.
I have a modified clutch basket and an inner basket from an 1150. HD springs. I think your bike has the old style inner basket and you may not easily change it without buying another pressure plate and the bolt spacers for the springs.
I'm out of remembering..Good luck. that bike is a beast in its stock form. When you install the 1168 pistons and 10.25/1 compression you will notice a huge difference. I haven't done my head yet but head work returns high dividends. OK OK ill shut up-- you just mentioned an 1100e-- I cant help it

        Hey Marky, mark,

Sounds very close to my set up....a couple of gs drag racers have estimated my set up at 130 at the wheel. I am running 33 smoothbores which I am told is one of the best performing carbs or the 1100 gs for the street.
An oil cooler is always a good idea to increase volume and bring down temp for these bad boys.

Good luck on that mod. Billy. If the sun ever comes out again i will finally get my clutch basket back in and then will look into that chain item Do you recall some figures that estimate the power gain from going from a standard 630 O ring to a to a 530 non O ring.
I notice you said a 520 mod. Is that because the 750 starts with a 530 or are my number just jumbled as ususal.

Just a note on my basket repair.
I fried the plates and the fibers so i am instaling all new ones this time.
My bike came with 10 and 10 but Jay Regan is having me convert back to the 9 and 9 setup because the fibers and steels are wider and have less of a tendancy to to cut into the baskets. Some guys paint thier older 1100e motor black an I convert back to the older style clutch.. Who can account for Biker mentality

Hey Billy, how difficult, and what are the benefits of going to the 520 setup over the 530? I'm in need of new sprockets and chain myself, and might look into it if it's worth it.

520 is not recomended for street use...not as strong as 530. Won't stand up to extended use

Don't they use 520 on modern day sportbikes? My 700 doesn't have as much horsepower as a modern 600. Why would there be a problem?

Most current sport bikes use a 530 as stock. Many people put 520 on in place of the 530 with no trouble, though. The 520 is lighter and the sprockets are lighter, reducing both rotating and unsprung mass for better handling and faster acceleration. Superbikes and MotoGP bikes all run 520 chain with no problems, so I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you have 180hp+ and slicks on your bike.

Superbikes are not using their chains and sprockets for many miles.....Road bikes are. I don't think he is going to notice the unsprung mass difference in his street machine but He might want to go with the heavier duty 530 for reliability and longjevity.

The decision of course is his.

A good quality 520 chain is almost as strong as 530. Everything about the two spec-wise is the same except for width. The one I'm getting has a tensile strength of nearly 8,000 and wear rating of 750. A basic non o-ring chain has a wear factor of about 100. And with Vortex sprockets you have virtually no runout from sprockets that aren't perfectly round.

                            Luke,
To get back to your question, with my wheels I just run the Katana 600 conversion. The '88-'89 wheels are the same as the Kat's. '90 and up are different. The early '90s 5.5" wheels are supposed to use the same cush layout as the GS. You could probably just use the early 90s conversion and it would fit. Less friction and ligter weight are the benefits. You lose less hp to the rear wheel.

I have to jump in here and tap some of theis knowledge being passed around. I am rebuilding (engine top and bottom) my 78 GS1000 and one of the things that needs replacement anyway is the chain and sprockets. My bike chews these things up at a rate of at least one chain every year and front sprocket every 2. The rear still looks good. Is this nomal? What chain/sprocket combo should I run on this old beast?

It is being bored to an 1100 basically and the crank has been trued and welded as well as a new clutch basket and clutch. I Was thinking of going back to the 15 tooth stock in the front since the 14 I am running is chewed up now and I didn't really like the loss of top end/lower RPM. The rear currently is 42 tooth.

Please pour out your experience on me. I need advice.
