Changing the cam timing by a tooth is asking for trouble, it will never run right if it even runs at all or it may self distruct. if you want to change it you need to get slotted cam gears or very carefully slot your original gears so that the cam can be degreed

hello, im new to this...what do you mean when you weld the crank?...i am currently rebuilding a 82 gs650, and have questions about cam timing. would retarding the exhaust cam a tooth create a crossflow action?, or am i just being foolish. also, are the engines interference fit?

Don't mess with your cam timing. The 650 engine has a well deserved rep as a rock solid reliable engine and changing the cam timing could cause problems you don't want to deal with.
If you're looking for more power, it is best to go up in displacement.

Amen. Simple, honest advice. And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

I have the pictures guys and even a little video footage but need some more time to go through it all and sort out what to post on my web site. I may omit the video clips just due to the size. I will post in here again when I get them up there

Well guys I know it took forever but I finally updated the web site.
My latest pics are up there as well as updates to the friends bikes
section.
If you want, check it out by clicking on my "WWW" button below.
I may still do up a video feed. Not sure, running out of room on
the web server. But I did a little walk through at the shop.

Carbs! I got a set of 34mm carbs! They will be rebuilt and rejetted to work with my setup. Sweet! I don't have more info on them, my mechanic found them for me and said they will work awesome for the work he is doing on the engine.

If anyone is interested I resampled my walk through video clip from 12-13-03 at Paparo Performance and put it up on my web page under the Bike Projects section. I tried hard to balance it between size and quality so it should be easy to download and still very watchable.
I am getting the itch real bad I want to get onto the bore and get this thing put back together. The cosmetics may suffer until spring. I am running out of money for sure with Christmas, wifes birthday and an anniversary all in the next two weeks! :-({|=

Hey Hoomgar nice web site, yours so much kicks ass over mine. I'll try not to hold that Kawasaki against you . Of course I am digging that 650 Turbo, those where pretty quick back in the day. I remember racing one on my 78 GS1000. Werent those a variation on the Seca? I'm trying to find pics of my old bikes, think I'll post em on my site....Merry X-Mas

As mentioned in some other topic threads recently I am scrubing the rebuild of the stock top end. My mechanic has a 1980 GS1000L top end for me with some interesting differances from the stock one on my bike. This one has way larger intakes on it. He has the whole bike so I got the carbs and carb boots off it as well. He will rebuild/jet the carbs for me to match the bike and they are 34mm cv carbs which he says should do better for me with the highway riding I do at times. Plus they should do better than the stock 26mm's did at feeding the engine once we up the displacement.
Another interesting thing about this head and block combo is that the front of it has a bolt in the center to help prevent leaking which my old one doesn't have. But it never leaked either. I am going to get some pictures for you guys who are interested in following this topic. I need to get a camera. I have to keep borrowing one everytime I want pictures.
The intakes between the two are very differant in size. So much so that you could not even bore out the stock one to be as big as this other one is because there wouldn't be enough metel there to do it with.
The bottom end is going back together today, new clutch and clutch basket, the crank as you know if you have been following is done and everything else looks really clean.
The rest of the bike I have been working on at home and have made progress. I promiss pictures are forth coming.
Life has been busy and money has been short. I wanted to be farther along by now but it is still moving, just slower than I wanted.

As promissed guys I got new pictures and an update. The project took a small turn. We are now using a cylinder and head that will give better flow. They are off of a 1980 GS1000GL and have way larger intake ports. We will also use the 34mm constant velocity carbs off this bike too. The head and cylinder combo also has an extra bolt in the front of the cam chain area to help seal it against leaking. I think it is unique because my old ones didn't have this.
The bottom end is back together and there are pictures of everything I just mentioned. There are also pictures of Brian (my son) sitting on the dirt bike I bought him that Joe is rebuilding. He is very excited to get it running and ride it as his expression shows. Check the update from 01-20-04 http://home.ptd.net/~megabyte/projects.html
I also updated my friends bikes section. If anyone would like me to add their bikes to it please email me your pictures and I will put them up
I have a lot of new cosmetics to add as well but I will post them when I start to put it back together.
Rock on!
