1978 GS1000 Complete Engine Overhaul With Mods

I suggest welding the crank and welding the clutch basket/heavier damper springs.
Don't know what I can do to help, but I'll do my best if you have questions.

OK so I want to get some opinons.

I put in the Wiesco 1085 kit and ported the head. Which carbs do you think will be best for this application? I have both and am not sure which ones to use?

Mikuni 29mm smoothbores?

or

Mikuni 33mm smoothbores?

I would go with the 29's, I believe you have Stage II cams in there right? and the 33 mm carbs would cost even more low down torque.

My opinion is the 29's are perfect for a 1085/pipe/pods/with or without mild cams/light porting/polishing work. Some may say the 33's but I think you'd only justify them with even more displacement, more porting, and hotter cams. I once tried to help a friend jet some 33's for his 1085/pipe/pods setup and we had difficulty getting the bike to run right except on the mains. PITA. Motorcyclist mag once mentioned the 33's were a bit too much in their opinion too, noting very sensitive throttle response, etc, so they went with the 29's on their GS1000 project bike back in '84. Beyond that and a few half heard discussions over the years, I know little about the 33's on a 1000. I've never heard anything but good about the 29's...as long as you can get a set in good condition (why I've given up) AND if you can jet them right. Jets/parts can get expensive. There's even much discussion over what slides are the best to use. Vance and Hines used to sell "pre-jetted" 29's for the 1085/pipe/pod set up but I couldn't get any help when I contacted their office or Sudco.
This bike is such a well mannered bike that I personally don't like the porting or hotter cams idea at all. The other mods work fine.
I guess it's just my opinion that trying to eek out every bit of HP is going to compromise road manners of the bike. I know we're all different but my bike is plenty fast and still reliable and I can imagine what some 29's would do for my bike. They would be the perfect compliment for my mods. But a more heavily modded bike will still not beat the new bikes if you're strictly thinking power and showing off a bit. I know you can make the bike faster but it comes at a price. The frame/swingarm and general design of the bike doesn't warrant too much extra HP either. The other stock parts being forced to work under the extra power will wear out faster.
I may just be getting older and don't see the need for anything beyond 1085/pipe/pods/stock/mild porting and/or mild cams. Without the wilder mods, I see no reason for the 33's. The gains won't be worth it in my opinion.
I'm sure someone who's done wilder mods and 33's will tell you their bike runs great, but I wonder if it will be around long if ridden regularly.

This is kind of what I was feeling too guys thanks for the input. I'll most likely go with the 29s and end up using the 33s on my 1197 kit GS1100 engine once I port a new head for it. That is another project for another time though.

A Real Estate attorney whom I used to deal with all the time taught me a valuable lesson.

When you are negotiating in a situation that might make you lose your cool (I think this situation may qualify!), BEFORE you meet or talk with the other party write down all the points that you want settled. Put it on a legal pad or cards and even if you feel weird.... take them with you and use them! . Don't raise your voice and let the other person talk until they are finished, but CALMLY and firmly state your point(s), multiple times if needed, remaining calm is the key...and the toughest thing to accomplish. Especially after you are so hot you want to just.....well you get the idea. It also makes people so confused, because they expect ranting and raving, that they sometimes just give in to make the confusion go away.

It really works if you are persistent... much better in person than by the phone because we all hate confrontations. When you start calling someone multiple times the natural fight or flight instinct kicks in and can make an already messy situation even worse.

The mitigating circumstances in your situation are that the guy is/was a friend and that you already paid him.... You know that he already forgot about that money.... Just a thought, but maybe if you offered him a token payment whatever to be paid when he finished….. Sorry for your pain on this, but if it is getting you so ****ed that it is affecting your life, then it is time to resolve this. I would go in prepared…. And CALM…

It's all good guys. Yes I need help. Not motivating him but in actually finishing it. He is going to sell his business now after 25 years of doing this he is pooped. That is the problem I guess? He has promised to finish this for me but at this point I am not holding my breath. I do want it back now. In the worst way. I don't even care if I finish the restore, I just want my bike back. After riding the 83 these last few months I have come to appreciate the GS1000 all the more. My 83 1100 rocks. I love that bike but I would trade two of them in a heartbeat for a mint 1000. The 1000 fits me so much better, is more comfortable for me and for some reason I can handle it better?

If you read a few posts back you will see the list of things I need help finishing. Right now I need to finish my attic crawl space project so I can get my garage space back! You can't even walk through there right now let alone work on a bike.

It is going to happen, I promise you that!
