high idle 1980 gs1000
i just bought me a gs1000 and it has been running great for me until today, but i drove on the freeway at 75mph with an rpm of about 5500, when i got of the freeway and drove around town, my bike would not idle below 2500rpms, unless i let the clutch out a bit then it will drop to 1200 - 1500rpms, i stopped and parked the bike for a few hours thinking that would help, but when i started it up again, it went right to 2500, if you have any suggestions, they would be very appreciated! -

Hi,
It sounds like your air intake system needs some help. A high idle is usually indicative of an air leak. There are several tutorials on my website concerning intake boot and O-ring replacement, air intake repair, airbox sealing, etc.
Here, let me give you and extra "mega-welcome". Go through the maintenance lists. Every item is critical, properly cleaned carbs, valve adjustments, air intake system sealing, charging system repair, etc. It's a 30 year old machine and needs a lot of TLC. Any shortcuts will lead to frustration. All of the maintenance that has been neglected for the last 20 years must be done in order to have a good running motorcycle.
Anyway, let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'.
I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
If there's anything you'd like to know about the Suzuki GS model bikes, and most others actually, you've come to the right place. There's a lot of knowledge and experience here in the community. Come on in and let me say "HOoooowwwDY!"....
Here is your very own magical, mystical, mythical, mind-expanding "mega-welcome". Please take notice of the "Top 10 Common Issues", "Top 15 Tips For GS Happiness", the Carb Cleanup Series, and the Stator Papers. All of these tasks must be addressed in order to have a safe, reliable machine. This is what NOT to do: Top 10 Newbie Mistakes. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...
Please click here for your mega-welcome, chock full of tips, suggestions, links to vendors, and other information. Then feel free to visit my little BikeCliff website where I've been collecting the wisdom of this generous community. Don't forget, we like pictures! Not you, your bike!
Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed. I will put you on my prayer list.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

if you dont find a airleak it might be
worth checking the advance mechanism i had same problem on my cbx it decided it wanted to idle at 2000-2500 for no good reason
checked everything a dozen times then finally found the advance retard was stuck in the advance position, bit of a freeup and lubed idles like a dream again

On my bike, I set the idle and bout a week later it starts to rev high again, about 2500 rpm. Well I found out my idle screw would turn its self in... I back it off and is fine for a bit. Check to make sure yours itsn't moving.

My guess is you cleaned up the carbon built up crap inside the engine and you need to lower the ilde speed screw because it is running much more efficiently.
well at least it is running so you can do a trial and error look over.
lugging the engine with your clutch will do bad things that you will have to fix. try to avoid doing it.SUZUKI , There is no substitute
