GSXR Wheel on a GS1100

Hey, I want to put a 17X5+ rear wheel on my 82 GS1100 and get rid of that 17X3 any ideas, so I can run a little larger rear tire 150+ size......Thanks

I've never done it myself but I am pretty sure your going to have to swap out your swing arm to pull that off? I say this because I wanted to put a wider rim on the back of my 78 GS1000 a few years back and found out that's what I would have had to do, so I left it go. My old swingarm design is for the old narrow tires though and yours may be a very differant story.

This is your lucky day.
Just link onto GS Resources and go to Performance Mods scan down to Major 1100 Kat rebuild. by the Katman.
In these 7 pages he shows you drawings and details to assist you with this transformation . The Katman does all of this with the use of the stock swingarm on a 1982 Katana. the mods will be the same for all chain drive models.
Keep us posted on your progress with some photos.

It?s fairly easy to do what you want. I?ve done it on my -83 except I used an org. widened rim. My recommendation is to go for a -89 GSXR rim that is 4,5". Will fit a 160 tire like a dream. The reason? It?s the easiest way. You can go for larger too if you want to put in a little more work into it. Your call actually. The 160 tire has no problem transferring the power from my engine to the ground and the handling is great.
Look at Katmans design if you want to go for 5,5" or go to www.biker66.com if you want to go for 4,5". Ok, its not a Suzuki but it uses the engine and drivetrain from the GS.

Going with a wide wheel is fine, but don't try running a radial rear with a bias front. That's always been a big no-no. You can do it the other way around, radial front with a bias rear. Unless you're able to run a radial front stick to a fat bias ply tire on the rear.
