Gs 550 timing with xenon light

    Hi,

Is there any guides on using a xenon timing light for a gs 550 I have read the Hayes and caymer manuals but they don't help.

    Am I being thick?

Are we talking about a 78-82 model with mechanical advance or a 83+ model? For the MA models there are 3 marks (actually 6: 3 each for cylinders 1&4 and 2&3) on the advance mechanism under the ignition cover: one labeled T, one unlabeled, and one labeled F. T is for Top dead center, and has no bearing on ignition timing. The unlabeled mark is idle timing (<1200 RPM), and the "F" mark is Full advance (2500+ RPM).

I'm not at home now, but I'm pretty sure there's a rudimentary procedure in the Cylmer manual with a couple of illustrations. Check the maintenance chapter (chapter 2?). It's pretty early in the book, and not in the ignition section.

Do a search for my handydandy back yard mech timing method. Don't need no stankin xenon lights!
