I've looked into swapping/adding an electric start to my kick-start (only starting option) 77 400X. I know it can be done on my side of the coin, all I need is the starting clutch gear, starter and necessary parts to do it, for in my year you could get both options for starting. I dropped the idea after I got my Carbs perfectly cleaned and tuned to start on one kick (even in this ice cold weather)

However since the kick starter is located on the other side of the motor and I'm pretty sure kick start wasn't available at all for the 400 that year, I'm not sure if you can add one to yours... Just dive into Clymer manual and see... I'm sure with enough $ and motivation it will be possible but will it be simple??? I think not.

I'll browse mine and let you know the differences... Nothing like having that kick start if the battery is dead!

OK looked it up and the kick start is integrated into the transmission and counter balance systems... In order to add a kick start you'll have to remove the motor and disassemble the lower end of the engine and transmission...
(These are the Words of the all knowing Clymer manual)

So it ain't happening unless you feel like tearing out your crank shaft and transmission to do the project.

Sorry to bear the bad news.

This has been asked a few times around the shop here now but noone's actually tried it to my knowledge... not sure if that's because it really is too difficult/expensive or if it just hasn't been tried yet...
