degreeing cams
I have a 78 GS 1000e and I am thinking about adding some power to my bike while I have it apart and I want to know about degreeing cams - how involved is the process? Do you just need to re-slot a key way? Is it worth it, or is a bigger bore and larger valves the way to go? Is there a posting that explains the process? I did a search but I only found bits and pieces. I don't want to do anything that affects the reliability.

In order to degree the cams you first need to purchase sloted cam gears.
Then u can download the degree wheel from a web page with all the instructions to degree the timing. I am not on my home computer so I am not able to provide you with the info at this time but please e-mail me and i will foreward to you the apropriate info. The degree wheel is a free download and you can have it laminated for $2 it works great. If you degree the cams @ 106 for low end power and 110 for a power that come in at 1500 rpm higher.

Just my opinion. 106 degrees is perfect for this motor. The best compromise between low end torque and top end horsepower. I also have K&N's and a V&H pipe. Let me know if you have any jetting questions.And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

I will soon be degreeing the cams on my '83 1100ED. Is 106 a good number for this motor too? Thanks for any input......

I was in my local bike shop up in calgary today and they did not know where to get the slotted cam gears. does anyone know where i can order them?

or, use a dremel to modify your existing sprockets.

i would but I would rather swap parts inside the motor for fear of making a mess. If knew how or had an idea of what to do maybe.

I think he mans remove the sprockets , then use the dremmel. I purchased the sprockets mysdelt though - they aren't that expensive.

When I had my '79 GS1000E motor built, I ordered the slotted sprockets through Vance & Hines.And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
