Suggested Engine Mods for 79 1000S

I'm lucky enough to have a spare motor (without carbs) for my '79 GS1000S. I'm thinking about rebuilding the spare motor with a few performance boosting modifications.

I'm not after a full-blown race engine and I still want to be able to tour comfortably on the bike but would be interested in hearing what modifications others have found successful.

    Thanks
    Ian

    G'day mate .
    Welcome to the font .
The only mod I did to my '79 'S was to put a 1085 Wiseco kit in it . Refurbished the head and that's it .
It's a different bike now . Reliable , grunt plus and still bullet proof .
    Have fun .

    Cheers , Simon .

I got a wiseco 1085cc kit ,a new set of Gs1100g cams ,which give it a good shove the Gs
needed ,as i use it two up alot, i also raised gearing from 15/42 to 16/41 and it pulls that
      very easerly aswell....
when i had it Dynoed last it gave 68ftlbs of torgue and 95Bhp.....
      big improvement over stock figures...

I've read before where the 1100G cams are more aggressive but have never seen the specs. Anyone have a factory service manual and care to share the lift and duration numbers?

My GS1000 crank was found to be twisted when I started my top end project. It is now welded (after true and index).
If yours is ok, not sure if you need to consider that for your application. I'm sure others with more history with this engine will let us know.

from wot i was told my Gs1100g cams have more overlap tha stock ones, they also had slotted Ape sproxs fitted to help degree them in properly, with a new camchain...
my stock cams were badly worn...
also my crank was checked and welded as they can spin.......

Thanks everyone. Weisco 1085 kit and GS1100g cams it is (I wonder if they are still available as OEM parts).

Next time I need chains and sprockets I'll look at going from stock ratios to 16/41 too. BTW are most of you downsizing the chain from 630 to 525 (or something like that)?

Is there a big advantage using the Wiseco set up over installing a1100G top end including the cams and D shaped ports?

I asked Ray from Suziparts http://www.suziparts.com.au/ if he could give me a price on some GS1100G cams, explaining what I was trying to achieve. His reply was interesting. He said:

"...the cams for the GS1000 & GS1100 are the same!!"

Anyone have a definitive answer to Nessim's question? Perhaps there are different cams for various GS1100G models?

i would say a port job, and webcams and springs kit, this alone will make it a different bike, and if you wanted to blow more money, you could go with the wiseco kit, the cams and better flow will do most of the impressive work, also a good exhaust pipe so it can breath even better

Last winter I did a wiseco 1085 kit with wed cam and springs. Degreed the cam and all I can say is Hang on. I still need to rejet, I think it needs to be richer. and I'm using stock airbox and K&N filter. Money well spent.
