    question about 550's

i was going to put this in technical forum but i now cannot start threads there?, why?
anyway gs550 said it has 572cc's? so if that is true why isn't it a 600?
i have a old 420kx and it is 422cc's but ran in the 500 class, so this being possible, i am wondering if the 550's are really 572cc's?

Yeah just be happy it did get called a 550.

Anything here that is a 600 is dinged with high insurance.
Insurance types see nothing but the number on the registration and you pay according to a published scale.

Imagine having to subsidize the squidly shenanigans of modern 600 owners!

at 572 it probably should get rounded up though to 575 perhaps.
Honda makes the weird 150 cc bikes still.

I'm sure they kept the GS550 name just to take advantage of the fact that they'd already marketed the GS550 for a few years and it had a good reputation.

        It's a 572cc

The 8V GS550's, 1982 and earlier, were 549cc displacement. In 83 they got a bit more displacement as you've noticed, 4 valves, electronic advance, and the dual-throated siamese carbs.

All Manufacturers round up or down on motor vehicles (probably everything really) to achieve an edge for performance or insurance reasons. Been happening forever and probably will always. I think marketing has the biggest role. Saying you have the fastest ### in the ### class of bikes, or having a ### be cheap to insure, when it's actually a ### and selling alot more units.
