Search around for a lighter spring. Your '78 1000 should be fitted with a push /pull (dual cable) throttle, so it's safe to go lighter if you want to. I did the same on my 850. It's now more enjoyable to ride on longer trips.
Make sure your cables are lubed well to avoid sluggish returns, and enjoy the difference.:) The road to hell is paved with good intentions......................................

Less whining.
Actually... if you go to the hardware store, you can buy a little "S" hook... it's shaped like the letter "S", so if they try to sell you a "C" hook, you turn around and walk right of the store.
Anyway, that "S" hook can be hooked to the top of the spring, and the top spring pin, it'll give you about 25-30% lighter throttle. Personally, I like the throttle stiff, too much can go wrong when you need to chop the throttle and NEED to have it snapped closed and KNOW it's closed.
You could also get one of those "old man" wrist throttle clips... takes the pressure off your wrist and puts it on the pad of your palm...
