Exhaust pipes: What are the expected performance perks?

I was recently looking at some new Vance & Hines 4-into-1 exhaust pipes. They have three that will fit my 1980 GS1100E.

    -V12001 Street Megaphone System
    -V12001-P Standard Pro Pipe
    -V12002-PCO Pro Competition Only

Question: What levels of performance can one expect from these three? Descriptions can be found at http://www.motorcycleproshop.com/exh...ines/vhsuz.asp

I realize for just cruising around, the standard pro pipe would suffice...but I'm interested in knowing whether or not I should pay the extra cheese for either the Street Megaphone System or Pro Competition only pipes.

    Thx!

    Hey ya Rudi!

The Standard Pro Pipe and the Pro Competition Only pipes are designed for drag racing and do not look at all like regular pipes. Look at Scotty's bike...he has the Pro pipes on his. The Street Megaphone System is a more standard looking unit and allows more clearance on the right side for turning.

For everyday living I would go with the Street Megaphone System. To fully benefit from the Pro Competition Only you would need a lot of head work and different carbs.

Then the Street Megaphone System it IS! :-)

BTW, if I got this system...would I have to do anything special to the carbs?

As Hap said, the Pro pipes are sidewinder type drag pipes meant to make power at high revs. They severely limit ground clearance in RH turns and have no baffle at all, making them deafeningly loud. Not that I might mind, but your neighbours might.

For street use, the only reasonable way to go is the street megaphone system, which has a baffle and will allow decent cornering clearance. Better than stock, actually.

As for jetting, if you have the stock carbs/airbox/filter in place you probably won't HAVE to, but installing a stage 1 jet kit WILL make it run smoother, cooler and give a bit of power. Personally, I will not install a pipe without a jet kit. To me, they are complementary mods that just don't go on separately. But that's me, YMMV. 8)

I installed Vance & Hines 4-into-1 exhaust on a 1982 GS850G I had in the early 90's. It worked great -- louder than stock, as expected, but not unbearably so.

One advantage of the V & H is not having to drop the swingarm to clear room for rear axle removal. It made rear wheel change a breeze, particularly since I had saddlebags on that bike.

On the advice of my mechanic, I replaced the stock main jets with ones that were one size larger. That was the only mod. As I said, I experienced no running problems with those pipes and this slight modification. The bike always started, accelerated, and held speed perfectly -- a great day-to-day performer.

What exactly does a Stage 1 do to the carbs? How many stages can one go "up"?

              The stages refer to the level of intake system modifications;

Stage 1 - new main jets, new needles, maybe new pilot jets (depending on the kit), air screw adjustments. Meant to work with the stock airbox and filter, mainly corrects the factory lean settings required to clear emissions rules. Can be used with the stock pipe or an aftermarket one.

Stage 3 - new main jets, new needles, new pilot jets, air screw adjustments. Used with individual pod filters or open velocity stacks. Used to alter carb settings to work with the much higher airflow of the individual filters. Meant to be combined with an aftermarket pipe to maximize airflow gains and improve performance.

Just a note on the pro pipe. There is a baffel called a competition baffel which can be installed in the negaphone((one bolt) It can be used with or without fiberglass . it deepens the tone to a very tollerable point and also restricts enough to make normal lower rpm torque. The problem is that it is so obvious. the pipe definitely is not for someone who enjoys doing twisties. I never drag the pipe but i never race in corners either. and my bike is lowered 2 inches

Scotty, how do you get away with using that pro-pipe on the street. i know you say you have baffled it, but it still must be loud. Here in UK we have laws that govern how loud an exhaust can be. I'm not saying that we all keep to them exactly, but a pro-pipe level would definitely mean a trip to court!

BTW is the "coming soon - KZ1300" the ultimate GS mod?!?!

I use the V&H megaphone pipe with K&N pods and stage three jet kit. It increased thump quite noticably when we installed it. We added the Dyna electronic ignition at the same time. This was (up until last fall) the only mod I ever did to the bike. You can see it in the gallery --> http://www.thegsresources.com/_scrip....php?RegID=413

as of yesterday a drastic change in my income may place the kz1300 on hold. the ultimate mod should be in transit from california and it is not a whole bike or a new engine but a very simple bolton. the pro pipe cracks like thunder and is harsh even when just cruising. But with the baffel in, I dont think it is a loud as some of the large crotch rockets with the fiber cans. As far as how do we get away with the noise. Well this is the south and the state of florida.
The police dont bother anyone with loud pipes unless they are wacking the throttle in a busy area. You know the type of rider.
There are still some traces of individusls rights here in the south. it is a place anyone can learn to love if he will take the time to shut up and listen to the locals. It took me a couple of years now i will fight to stay here.

                          All,

I am curious as well, does anyone know any actual performance numbers from Jet kits, filters and exhaust?

I searched around and didn't find anything.

I am planning on doing a stage one Jet kit, K&N drop in filter and Vance Hines Megaphone and am trying to quantify the performance increase I should see.

                          Thanks! 8)

                            vance/hines pipes

I run a pro pipe on a gs1100,stage 3 jet kit, otherwise stock engine,I have the competition only baffle and the street megephone baffle.I use the street baffle for inspection stickers and for early morning rides to work,so not to upset the neighbors. The pipe is acually quieter than most late model systems, and at $215 new ,it is the best value out there.I dont have numbers either, but i can tell you compared to stock, the power increase is very obvious. From a previous thread I posted (Mods For 130hp From GS1100?):

My bike with stock pistons, stock head, stock cams made 113 Hp and 75 foot pounds of torque. I do have a pro drag race only pipe, 36 mikuni flat slides, and a dyna msd ignition. When I put in a low compression 1166 wiseco kit and kept the stock unported head and cams I got 128 Hp and the torque was around 80 something. I degreed the stock cams to 110/110 but haven't run it on the dyno again. I picked up about 2 tenths so I think I'm probably over 130 Hp. I'm looking for reliability and ease of maintenance.

The flatslides will be good for some of that power (probably 5-6hp anyway), but it gives you an idea of what to expect.
