What Gear Ratio when Running a Slick

Ok all you Slick heads out there do you run a lower ratio or keep it the same.

I'm thinking with a slick you can gear it lower to take advantage of the new found traction.

I'm I correct or just hosing myself.

I have no experience there but your thinking sounds logical to me. thats what i would try. But i guess you must first be sure that you cant break the wheel loose with the present gearing after you install the slick. Just thinking out loud Jake 8O

I'm thinking the same way Scotty. Gear it low cause the slick is going to stick and then use all 5 gears in the 1/8 mile, instead of using just 1/3 of 4th as I go through the line.

If I'm at 10K in 5 gear at the line, I should be faster than I'm now??

hey jake i don't know if this will help or not (i have no idea how this works but it is for sproket ratios)

My only concern would be if shifting five times would be an advantage over four shifts. Lower gearing will make you shift REAL quick through 1-2-3. That should make racing more fun, just not sure if it would help with consistency in bracket racing. Just change the front a tooth and see what happens.

With the air shifter I would think it would be good to be redline in 5th when you cross the line. Without the air shift you might lose time shifting.

You should never use all 5 gears in the 1/8 mile. That would make you shift almost on launch and many tracks have a concrete pad that goes to asphalt around 60 to 100 feet out. Shifting only makes you bounce and get up on the wheelie bars if you run them. You should have shifted into 4th gear just before hitting the first timing cones. Even with this gearing you will probably run out in the quarter. Basic rule is if you have the HP pull the gear. Gear on the rear NOT the front. Larger rear gears are easier on chains and the out put shaft and tranny bearings. I know they are expensive but buy a slider.

I was running a 15/49 and on the 17th I will be running a 16/49. I will let you know the difference.

BTW, I was just getting into 4th with the 15/9 (I am running a 5.5 slick)

Before, without the slick, I was spinning way too much in 1st and 2nd and never got into 4th in the 1/8th.

Why are you shortening your gear ratio? I would think the charge out of the hole would be more beneficial or are you on 1/4 mile where a top end charge can be exploited fully? Curious is all?

Actually, I am only running in the 1/8th mile for this series, but should I advance to the Division finals, then I would be running in the 1/4.

My strategy this year is not to go faster, but be consistant and not break.

At my last track appearance, I think I proved I could be consistant on the starting line (12 of 14 passes had 1.70-1.76 60 ft times) and somewhat on the et (10 of 14 were 7.8-7.9).

The gear change for the next meet is to find the difference, and if I can still be consistant, will keep that ratio should I go on to 1/4 mile track.
