I bought a 80 1000G with title problems. I have a 79 that needs a rebuild. Engine swap and make a sleeper out of it, even fake the kick starter.

Easy swap. The rear motor mount needs minor mod. Also depending on year The drive shaft on the 1000 has a bigger bolt pattern. Some day I plan on doing it to my 850. Motor under the work bench just waiting. Hate to tear it apart when it runs good

            The 850 is a 79 and the 1000 is a 80.

The 1000 will not have any provisions for the kick starter, so there will be no easy way to fake it.

As mentioned, the driveshaft will be a bit different, you will have to change the driveshaft along with the engine.

Well I did mention "fakeing" the kick starter, I am sure that something can be figured out that way. I have the whole bike so the shaft is not the problem, replaceing the secondary gear to the drive just might be, since the replacement gear did not come with the shims.

Don't replace the secondary drive. Just install the 1000 engine complete. Remove the swingarm from both bikes, swap the drive shafts, put the 850 swingarm (with the 1000 shaft) back in the bike.

You might be able to swap the entire swingarm over, I can't say for sure. The part numbers are only different by one digit, which only means they are different, but no idea what changed.

It is the 1000 engine that needs the secondary drive replaced. Have not tried starting the bike yet, the airbox is off and no bat. I intend to part out the bike and try to save the motor.

The 850 has over 53000 miles on it and is very tired. I want to pull the motor to get the last two carb mounts off and tear down the top end to freshen it up a bit. Sooooo drop in the 1000 if not tooo big a deal.

OK, then. I don't know if the secondaries are interchangeable, I do know, however, that they are different.

The 850 has a 16/17 ratio, the 1000 has a 17/16 ratio, which is why it turns fewer revs at the same road speed.

Because of the different ratios, the housings might be a little different, you will have to blaze that trail for us and let us know.

Rich, that is not my bike, I do not have yellow plug wires.

Just to recap, I have a gs 1000 with a bad secondary gear, it came with a replacement part, but not the shims that came with it.

That bike I am going to part. I will save the engine and install it in the 79 850, while I rebuild that motor. That is if it bolts in. Looks like it will.
