    Cam degreeing

Okay, so I shaved the head and jugs of my '79 "S". I have slotted cam sprockets, torqued everything down, installed the degree wheel on the ignition side of the bike and all looked well. Checked to ensure that the bike was in neutral (rotated the rear wheel). Cam adjuster installed and released.

Put a 19mm wrench on the nut to rotate the crank and no joy. It will not rotate forward. It will, however, rotate backward (I know I'm not supposed to do that) when I grab the flywheel and turn it. This is my first time attempting to degree the cams. And by the way, why should you not rotate it backward, as long as I'm asking dumb questions?

Am I missing something simple here? Do I need to take the clutch basket out? I've read the posts on degreeing here, watched the videos, read the pdf's, etc. I didn't expect to have an issue rotating the crank. Appreciate all suggestions. Thanks folks.
