    Frame/engine pairing for 7-11 swap?

Was spit balling ideas for a no-holds-barred GS build the other day with a friend, and I mentioned the 7-11 swap (1100 motor in a 750 frame).

Did a few searches, but cannot nail down the year/model range of the frames and engines that work for this swap. I'd assumed it was just another mod for the 77-79 GS 750 bikes, but now am not so sure.

So what's the Venn Diagram for frames and engines that can cross-breed into a 7-11 build?

    TIA

    7/11 swap

Last months' issue of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics has a decent article on that subject, you can order back issues (from a US distributor) at
www.classicbikebooks.com. Unsure of any source material for the 8-valvers, though.

There was an article in Classic Motorcycle Mechanics dated July 2005 that described A GS 750 with a GS 1000 engine.
It doesn't mention what had to be done to fit the engine in the frame but I believe the lower brackets have to be modified?

You must be talking about an 1100E 4 valve engine, the 1100 2 valve engines were all shaftys . I dont know about pre-80 frames, but 80-82 750 accepts the 1100E, not the 83 & up.

The GS1000E's are 8V chain drive, like the Cooley replicas

So is the 7-11 swap strictly a 16-valve affair?

Well, no but you said 1100 and yours is a chain drive, the 1000E was chain drive, the 1100G is shaft and the 1100 chain drive is a 4 valve.
I believe you can stuff an 1000E engine in there and possibly an 1100E.

This would be a totally different bike, not my current 7/850.

Interested in hearing this. I keep looking at the Kats and ES's, but want to stay around 1100cc. Would love to see an 1100 or 1150 shoved into this... http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/3776181155.html

Probably easier to just wait around and find a decent 1150E with a fairing and deal with the subtle differences.

So what about 1100/1150 top end and cranks on a 1000 chain drive bottom in a 750 frame?

                    Heh.
