Improved performance

I just got back from a ride from Chicago to Tennessee and back on my 1980 gs850. At the start of the ride it was leaking a very small about of oil on the casing on the right side. I know that the manifestation of that oil could be anywhere with the wind and all, but that is really not my question. Only had to add 1/2 quart of oil the entire trip. Seems normal.

As I continued on my trip, I notice that the oil stopped leaking and the sound of my motorcycle changed. It has a bit more growl now than it did. In addition, the performance of the bike at lower RPMs is better. It seems that the bike is quicker and more powerful.

Is it possible that the trip, which was many hours at 5,000 rpms or higher, could have made the bike run better? Or, is it that my confidence has grown for the bike.

maybe if the bike had been sitting for sometime.

Or ridden slowly a long time. Italian tune-ups work wonders sometimes.

Riding slow forever loads up ports, valves, pistons, exhaust pipes and baffles with carbon which can seriously restrict airflow.

By riding if faster for hours you can blow some carbon out of the whole works, it can't help but run better.

Ride it harder. 5,000 is pretty much chugging an 850 anyway.

Italian Tune up

Sounds about right. I use the 850 to commute to work. Except for a 5 mile stretch of expressway, everything else is 45 mph or lower. Before I got it, it sat for years.

Believe it or not, it is 14,007.

Current mileage is 21,039, which is where it stopped about 14 months after the first picture was taken.

I hope to get the bike rebuilt and back on the road this summer, now that I am home.

Can't lie about the numbers on the Wing, either.

In just a few more months I can sell mine as a "low miles" special. Better buy some new footpeg rubber, the old ones are beat to hell.
