    help w 83 gs1100l running lean

I hope this is the right forum for this question.I am a big fan of the gs site. You guys have helped me with a lot on rebuilding this bike.
I have a 83 gs1100L.I have done just about everything to this bike besides rebuilding the engine. Its a great ride, love the bike.Low miles 3,400.
Just can not seem to get the engine from running hot n lean.Plugs show that it is running lean.PLus she pops out of the exhaust when warming up.Can smell the gas.Runs great warms up fast.just dont want to cook the pistons.

Stock are filter, new, with new foam around filter.4 into 1 exhaust.I bumped up the main jet to 130.(Thought this would offest the 4 into 1 exhaust.)
Have done the following to the fuel carb system.
Turned out the idle get to almost 3 1 half turns. That didnt help.
    Synchcronized the carbs.
Rebuilt the carbs, all new rubber o rings.New manifold boots.Freed up the idle jet. That is set at 2 turns out at the moment.
I have tried the following to get it leaner.
Replaced the main jets to stock. That didnt work.New carb boots.(thought it was getting to much air(This did help with the performance. She is quicker on the throttle response)
I took apart one of the upper carb body assembly vacuem throttle body.Looks to me like somebody stuck a washer in there and raised the needle.I didnt mess with that.Left it the way it was.
I might have missed something .I have done so much to try and get her runnining lean.
I was going to replace the igniter next.I have checked the timing it is right on the mark. All the reading that I have done shows signs of preignition condition. What do you think?
Any suggestions would be helpful, dont worry roast me,I have think skin.
    What am I missing?Thanks,Steve

In summary, you got stock airbox/filter setup, a 4 into 1 exhaust , new boots,( how about new o-rings at boot/head interface?) and you're back with original main jets. When you say "rebuilt the carbs", like how?

Have you tested your petcock for correct operation- the smell of gas is odd if you are running lean? A fouled plug will dump raw gas in exhaust and pop when it meets up hot gas.How about a plug pic. so we can test your "think skin" ?

New at manifolds.I have the 130 jets in the carbs.Total tear down and rebuild of the carbs, cleaned replaced orings. What a job, whew.Petcock is good, tested it.No gas going into carb.New plugs are white when I run it.If I clean them then put them back in,run the bike and a plug chop. They do not turn white, they are grey.Defintely not fouling plugs. No carbon or oil.
Guess I didnt check all my typos.Thick skin gotta have it in this world, thanks.

You should be around six half turns out on the idle mixture screw. (three turns)
