    Aluminum Swingarm Conversion

What's going to be the easiest way to drill my frame out for the conversion?

    #2
There was a lot of discussion on this a while back... plenty of info in the archives if you can find it

Some did it by hand, others reamed it, others made adapters, others made a new plate & welded it etc etc.

I just went crazy, drilled the frame out and got lucky. But I reckon the safest way (without high tech gear) is to tap the holes to 16mm and then ream. This will give you a better chance to keep it all aligned.

or get the correct size pivot bearing spacers so you can use the stock pivot bolt

Someone did that fairly recently didn't they. That sure would be the easiest way.

I just drilled the frame out to the 20mm swingarm bolt that I needed to use the Bandit swingarm.
I am a human drill press No all kidding aside It is not hard to get it straight when it has a pilot hole already.
I wanted to use the larger bolt for the extra strength

What do you mean tap the hole to 16mm? Like a tap and die set?

yes, tapping it to 16mm removes most of the metal in the hole, while still keeping it true, and making it much easier to ream out afterwards.

Sounds like a winner for me! Thanks for all the ideas. Got tired of reading all the threads about the swap. Thanks again!

BTW the 16mm hole will take the 1100E swinger pivot bolt, and that bolt is longer than the stock 750. You will need spacers or cut about 1" of new thread. The swinger is also a bit longer so you will need a couple of extra chain links, so.....this is a good time to convert to 530 chain & sprockets!
(If you do, don't forget to account for the longer swinger when calculating the number of new chain links.) I didn't

Broke my tap 3/4 of the way through but got it done. Took a new 120 Link 530 chain. Anyone doing a 1979 750 using an 83 GS1100 Swingarm the bolt does not need to be cut down shorter.
