I'll be switching the handlebars on my '83 650L this weekend. It all seems pretty straight forward except removing the right side grip. I am not sure what the throttle mechanism is like underneath the grip and how to remove and reinstall it. I am guessing it is the kind of thing that I could easily break. Can anyone give me a basic walk through on performing a handlebar swap?

There's nothing to fear, just take it apart and see!
If yours is like mine, you just remove the screws from the back of the kill switch/start button enclosure, and the two halves separate. The throttle tube rides in the grooves of those two halves. Once they're removed, the throttle tube comes free. Only thing to look out for is pay attention to how the throttle cable is connected to the tube as you take it apart. It will probably only go back together one way, but better to check and commit it to memory to make reassembly slightly easier. -
i agree, it's no big deal and it's not like there are a dozen parts that are going to tumble out when you take the two half's apart. Just have a good study of how the throttle tube mates with the two half's of the switchbox and put it back together the same. And take note of which hole in the plastic throttle assembly that the throttle cable was in. That's as complicated as it is.Comment

Thanks, guys! I heard some people complaining when it came to changing out grips and whatnot so I wanted to be sure before I got into it. I was thinking of waiting until a rainy weekend to do this so I don't miss any good riding weather but now I think I will give it a go tonight!Comment

How did your swap go? I swapped mine last year and the only issue was that there was a hole drilled on the bottom half of the start kill switch box. Now I don't have the hole and the box doesn't close all the way. Did u have a similar problem and what bars did u put on. I am currently riding with superbike bars from emgo and thinking about clip ins but unsure of how it would work out.Comment

All I did was unbolt everything and slide it off the factory bars and slid it back onto new bars and tighten . Super quick and easy !! Only problem is my new bobber grips are a little bit short on the throttle and there's a little gap but it doesn't bother me and isn't that noticeable ...Comment

I changed mine and wow arms stopped hurting when riding.
