    GS650G Oil cooler?

OK, I live in the Calif Desert Blah blah blah.. On my 81 GS650G I am looking for usable oil ports to use for a cooler. Yeah I am out of my knowledge base here but I am learning lol..
There is a large cover bolt, right side, under mag pick-ups, seems to be the oil gallery bolt? (see pic) Seems my only option is to run it from there to bolt/port on oil filter cap.. Am I on the right track?

    Personally I wouldn't bother.

I live in Australia and haven't had an oil cooler on any of my aircooled bikes (see signature). The temperature here regularly reaches over 100'F. What temps do you ride in?

I would do a few things, though - run premium grade petrol as it promotes a slightly richer burn and will aid cooling. Run synthetic oil as it withstands higher temperatures much better. Make sure you have clean air filters, check every few thousand miles.

    Cheers - boingk

EDIT: This is the typical reason for fitting an oil cooler:

here is another recent, ongoing thread debating the pro's and cons of fitting an oil cooler.

sorry, it wont tell you how to fit a cooler to your bike but it may help you decide whether you actually need one or not.

I wouldn't bother- this critter has got nice size sump with lots of surface to dump heat. use good oil and keep at high level. and keep moving!

JSP, that sounds like the bolt where early 1000 models connect their oil coolers. There was also a member who was selling an adapter plate for just that use, but I have not seen them here for a while. You might try a search for that subject.
I won't bother to advise you on whether or not to fit one, since that was not your question. I will say this; any way to dissipate heat on an air cooled engine is a good thing.

650 Katana model (650M) model oil pan has take off ports for an cooler. Might be hard to find though. Basscliff's website has a tutorial on how to build a take off adapter that attaches to the oil distribution cavity. Lots more details contained on threads in the archives too.

Thanks for the input, keep it coming!
Now for the record, The Blah Blah was that I don't really want to get in the debate about coolers being worth it or not. In my mind the oil temp I am running will dictate that one way or the other. I will have a temp gauge soon and we will see.
Also, please keep in mind that most of us don't see 100-120F days like some of us do. Four to six months out of the year I can see 130F days on a river run. This is why I run 20W-50 Summer, and 10W-50 winter with good results thus far.
If I find that my oil temp is braking 250 at any time I will be installing a cooler, a 230F thermostat, and fan, if at all possible.. My mind could be changed on this but it will take some good reasoning as to why its ok to let the oil get above 250, not just saying it's a wast of time.
I do want to hear it just give me the why behind it pls..

Thanks! I have seen that mod but not an option for mine.. I do not have that location on my motor like that mod tho lol Come to think of it, lol I have to check on the oil press switch. It seems to be located in the mag pickup housing. Have not had that cover off in some time but the diagram shows it there.. I dont think there is any room in there to do anything with the location but will look this weekend..

                  Hmmm..

Ok, if I do a cooler or not I do want a Oil Press Gauge and am looking for ports. Turns out to not be as obvious as I thought it would be and need help figuring out my options.. the forum only lets me post one pic at a time so two more to follow.
One pic is a bolt at two o'clock position from drive output( back of motor).. Pic 2 it a port bolt under mag pickup housing but there is a little piston with Oring behind this bolt ( no clue what that for LOL) Pic 3 this bolt is on left side bottom, in front of gear position sender that is in pic too, (this bolt looks exact as oil pan drain bolt in center of pan). Help lol

I know I could use this bolt/port on filter cap just seems there should be a better option..

Thanks Nessism, Koolaid, and Tom, and everyone! Input is always a good thing.. I am holding off on the idea for a bit. More research, and its winter so.. Check this out. Was riding home, 2am, and went over the mountain. The temp was around 25 on top for about 50mi.. No problem noticed at the time.. The next morning I find oil was way low,(below sight glass, and was full when I headed out the night before). Smoked hard when started, and still a little when hot. I was thinking I blew a valve guide in the cold, and walked away thinking of doing the top end.. It sat a week with me on the road working, and when I get back she is not smoking at all, not burning any oil, whatever it was just went away!?? Any thoughts? lol
