    steering head bearings 79 gs750L

Have any of you replaced the OEM steering head bearings with "ALLBALLS" bearings? The steering stem lower yoke(along with ALLBALLS bearing) doesn't come fully into the steering head frame housing. Races are in as far as they can go, but the bottom of the bearing(part housed with a seal) is exposed. Now the bearing adjuster ring and the crown bolt are sitting on slightly less thread of the stem. The plate welded to the base of the steering head still comes in contact with the steering stem lower yolk to inhibit excess handlebar rotation. The two plates come in to contact just shy of halfway of what they originally did. Is this a problem? How do I remedy this considering these bearings are supposed to work for my bike? Any help would be awesome, Thanks.

Are your bearings the tapered roller type? If so you need to modify your steering stem on 79 and older models.

All Balls Racing has a PDF detailing the modification. See: http://www.allballsracing.com/media/...kiStemmod2.pdf

Not sure if this will fix your problem but you may want to check it out.

I also have a 79 750L, but when I did my bearings, everything went together without a hitch. I do remember there being quite a bit of "what to do?" about the process though. I'm wondering if there are multiple sets of bearings out there that are being sold for the 79 750L, and only limited amounts of them actually sans-modification to the stem. I'll try to find the part # I ordered and let you know what I find.

Found it. I used the All Balls Racing kit 22-1005. Ordered it from Amazon actually...

thanks born. that helps. mine look the same. i was just worried about the bottom stem because originally the bottom bearing seal wasn't exposed and with the allballs bearings it is. Looks fine thought.
