    Steering damper gs1000e

    I'm taking my gs1000e to the track and the organizer requires a steering damper. I've been looking at the past posts for ideas. I'm thinking of going with a damper from fastfromthepast.com and a fork tube clamp. Where I'm still a little unsure is how to mount it to the frame. Wanted to pick the brain of the forum.

    What are people doing that have installed dampers?


    Does anyone still make a decent bolt on kit for the 1000?

    Use a damper from a GSXR, mount it to the frame where the oil cooler would go if it had one. There are threaded holes in the GS1000 frame already.

    Agemax posted some pics from memory. There are others.

      What do you do if you have an oil cooler though? I've got a damper that I was thinking of putting on the 78' 1000, old school, but working great. Couldn't get it mounted where the steering axis wasn't compromised a lot. The holes are 2" apart so it 'seemed' like a frame mount, but it just wouldn't work. And of course the other side mounted to the forks with the bracket shown.

        I saw the bracket that age max has (using the oil cooler mount holes) I was planning on adding a cooler and fairing in the future so trying to find an alternitive. Something in the style of the yoshimira gs1000. Right side mount just along/below the gas tank. I can't find any close ups on how he mounted it to the engine or right down tube???

            While i was bracing the frame on our racebike, I added a threaded boss on the right side downtube for the damper mount.

            i'm seriously surprised at the requirement for a damper - never heard of a sanctioning body asking for that before...not usually needed anyway. Ours is on 17's and jacked up for ground clearance - and the damper hasn't moved from it's minimum setting.

              Greg- thats the idea I was aiming for. how did you mount the section under the triple tree? Fork clamp or drill and tap the bottom of the tree? Just trying to figure out the angle so it doesn't rub anything.

                There are kits for the Kat frame available ex-Japan. They mount to the RH down tube using stock mounting holes;



                Not sure how different the non-Kat frames are, but you may be able to do something similar?

                  It uses a piece of 3mm steel angle which is held by the two bottom clamp bolts. Thsi permits a bolt mounting the damper end to work at the correct angle...

                  The Kat accessory won't fit the 8V frame - the piece of box section that it bolts to is not on the 8V frame at all.

                    Update- Finally getting a little motivation to work on the old girl. I ran by my local trusted welding shop and got a mount on the frame. The other parts from Fastfromthepast. It needs a little fine tuning and adjustment still but I'm liking the results

                      Just another alternative. That setup is very close to the mounting locations on all of the 831100e frames. I got an early GSXR damper to fit nearly same place on frame but bolts through a hole in the lower triple. No loss of fork travel that way and the damper has more action and GSXR is just long enough for full steering travel but still much shorter.


                      This is also very similar in size to the one age used and controlled electronically.

                        I would think a clamp on Boss would also work:

                        You wouldn't want it coming loose though...

                          If I did not have the welder boss I would go with the clamp on boss for sure up between the forks into the lower triple.

                              Im still unsettled on the position of the fork clamp. I may ditch it and go with a mount in the triple tree like yours.
