    GS650 to GS1100 upgrade?

I've got a line on a GS1100 engine complete w/ shaft drive tranny w/ less than 7000 miles on it for $300-400...I've been thinking on snapping it up and bolting it into my GS650 frame...will it bolt right in? Will it use the same ignition system/coils etc? It doesn't come w/ carbs...can I rejet my 650 carbs or use them as is? Are the frames the same?

The frames are not the same, but I'm not sure if you could squeeze the 1100 in there or not. Time to take some measurements. I would think the 650 carbs would be to small, it would be better to keep an eye out for some 1100 carbs.

Frames aren't the same? The 1100 is an '82 shafty, my bike is an '81 650 shafty...Hmm...I figured the 1100 was just an overbore of the GS engine. Anyway, the guy w/ the engine emailed me pics and it looks identical to my 650 engine...but I guess it might be bigger, no way to tell from the pics. The guy is oblivious since he just got ahold of it through a lien is parting it out. What's the biggest engine my 650 frame could hold? a 750, 850, 1000? Any info would be appreciated!

I'm not positive on this, but I think the 650 was the big engine in the small frame, the 850 and 1000/1100 are the big frame. I don't think there was a 750 shaft model, but if there was, I don't know if the frame is similar to the 650 or not.

There was a shafty 750 which never made it across to North America, to the best of my knowledge.

No way you can put an 1100 shafty engine in a 650 frame. Too small a frame. An 1100 or a 1000 shafty engine will fit in an 850 frame, because these frames were very much alike.

And if my hearsay serves me correctly, the 1000 was simply a bored (and stroked?) 750. If we make a syllogism, the 750, 850, 1000 and 1100 can be swapped with another of the same drive system.

            But I could be wrong.

The GS 1000/1100 drive shaft is also bigger SO if you are going to say put a GS1000 or 1100 in your 850 you need the driveshaft to go with it. They will never fit the 650 frame

When my 850 dies I have a gs1000 engine in the garage for it 8)

Ok guys. Great info. Just some wishful thinking on my part. Hell, I'd have loved to have gotten the 1100 engine for 300 bucks...would have been a hell of a power boost for little money. Plus could have resold the 650 engine. Guess I'll just be satisfied w/ what I got for now, till I get something else maybe. Maybe just get a 4into1 and some new jets or something. Or not. Many possibilities. Love my 650 anyhow. Reliable as hell.

The last is my first try at a custom.
Squeezed a GS1000 motor into a 650 frame and went from there.

Not an 1100, but NEVER say never :P

Yep...I agree. An 1100 will fit if one has the will, skill, money, time, etc.
For example: There are several Yamaha, YSR50 chassised bikes with RD350/400 engines running around the country. 8O

I have an 1100 motorcycle and an 850 engine. Right now the 850 engine is sitting in the 1100 frame. The cases look different but other than a few very minor mods on the carb brackets it is a direct bolt in. I'm not going to use the 850 engine, but I thought I would. I changed my mind because it's a lot like chevy small block / big block. Once you experience all that torque and raw power ya just can't go back to the smaller engine!

A very cool bike, but notice that its a 1000 CHAIN drive engine in what used to be a 650 shaft frame.

Guess he knows what side his toast is lubed on.... 8O
