having the head gas flowed, fitment of Stage 1 cams and either Keihin CR33's or Mikuni's. Does anyone run a similar setup and does the performance gain warrant the cost?

1979 GS1000 Mods
I currently have a 1979 GS1000 which runs a Vance Hines 4 into 1, Wiseco 1085 big bore kit, Dynajet Stage 3 kit on VM28's fitted with bellmouths, Dyna coils and Dyna S ignition and Falicon clutch. I am mulling over the idea of

You have already done the other important parts why not let it breathe better now to take advantage of the other mods? Change the cams. I run .370/.370 and .390/.390 cams in my modified 1000's
(currently 1085,1100 & 1115)
I do not recommend going to the 33 carbs. Your 28's should work well or getting a set of 29 smooth bores might be a tad better. I believe that you can simply bore your 28' to 29mm and gain a little bit of flow also.

This is like asking how long is a piece of rope.
Webcam in the US lists weld/regrind prices starting at $455. Carbs ain't cheap either - at least that much. Depending on your cams you may need springs - about $65. Add in gaskets and misc. crap and you are getting close to the cost of a faster bike. Not as cool as a GS though. At any rate, I guess it depends on how you qualify "worth it". If having a fast GS makes you happy then go for it. If you just want fast bike and don't care if it's a GS, then I'd say no.Last edited by Nessism; 01-11-2015, 10:32 PM.Ed
