    GSXR oil cooler usability.

I have had conversations with friends about whether or not an oil cooled GSXR oil cooler will work on a GS. One of my friends (whom I have learned a ton from) says that there is a difference because some engines rely more on the cooler than the fins on the engine as where I can't figure how cooler oil temps would hurt. I have been proven wrong many times when I don't listen to him so I'm hoping to pose the question to many others as well.

The fittings will have to be changed of course but mounting it shouldn't be too hard. Many thanks in advance.

You are simply looking for the correct balance. You dont need too much heat coming out of the engine. Unless you are running a 1300 cc BB you probably don't need a GSXR cooler.

Anything that cools the oil is good unless you live in a cold climate. A LOT of people don't know or realize that dropping the oil temperature helps the valve spring life. The valve springs create a lot of heat just through their motion. This is also why I like 750 oil pump gears & top end oilers. Those additions aren't only for increased oiling but to also get heat away from the valve springs.

You did show us a pic of what I assume is the candidate cooler, but you didn't mention any models or years.

I put the 1150 cooler on my 1100 and the difference was like WOW! So much difference that I rarely ride without the cooler covered with cardboard.

If you list the exact models and years, maybe someone will chime in with, "Hey, I did the same thing, here are some tips."
1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

The oil cooler is from a 1990 GSXR 750. I couldn't help but think that it wouldn't hurt to lower the temps. To be perfectly honest, I just thought that it would look a lot better than the wee rectangle. I'm thinking of putting it into an 1150 EF model and I find it does run warmer than the 1150E. The pic doesn't really show how much more surface area the Gixxer cooler has. It is substantially bigger. I don't really live in a hot climate, although this year has been exceptionally warm. Thanks again guys.
