oil cooler/ oil pressure
1979 GS1000 with 1085 kit. @ 2500 miles on kit since rebuild. Installed a Lockhart oil cooler and adapter plate this morning along with a new oil pressure gauge. My old VDO gauge would not return to zero. My oil pressure lamp now comes on under 2k rpm. Oil lamp has never even flickered before. I changed back to my original sender but lamp still comes on. Gauge shows @ 1psi at idle and 4-5psi at 3 grand. Is it possible I have lost enough pressure with the cooler to light the oil lamp? Are high volume gears the answer? I have not yet tried to reinstall the stock sender plate with stock sending unit as I am letting the motor cool.Tags: None

Most likely you are loosing oil pressure because the pickup pipe on the adapter isn't sealing down over top of the oil feed port in the distribution cavity. The Lockhart adapter comes with a rubber hat piece that should seal down over the port but they fall apart with age.
Does your adapter have the rubber hat piece? If not, someone here posted info about a substitute part since the original part is no longer available.Ed

If the idiot light is on you probably have a flow issue, but those VDO gauges do not like engine vibration and the wear out. I even now have one on the handle bar and it wore out. I rebuilt it so it is more durable, so check it out before believing it.
The issue with the gauge going back to zero means the pivots are worn.
I have posted my repair here somewhere.

I have been replacing the VDO gauges with ones from McMaster-Carr---so far so good. They don't have black face ones though only white.
I might try a oil plug gasket on that adapter plate---not tonight though., Tired from today's poker ride.

I ran into this exact issue you have described. I was installing on my 80 GS1000e with a plate almost alike. with a pressure gauge mounted to the port on the right side case just above the ignition cover. this gauge reads aprox 7 psi when cold at 3 grand or so and when warm 6-7 at 5000. At idle when warm it just registers maybe 2 psi. With the cooler installed that all went south and thats why im responding to try to see if there might be a true fix. Where's Pops when you need him.

1978 Gs1085 compliments of Popy Yosh, Bandit 1200 wheels and front end, VM33 Smoothbores, Yosh exhaust, braced frame, ported polished head
1983 Gs1100ESD, rebuild finished! Body paintwork happening winter 2017:D
I would rather trust my bike to a technician that reads the service manual than some backyardigan that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix things.

Just getting back to this. Does any one have a part number they are using? The photos in the above link no longer work.

I was just being lazy...seeing if anyone had a part number...the one in the above link posted by 7981GS no longer works.
I didn't get to ride at all after this original post, I had some family issues to deal with. Now the bikes are put away. I'll have to tend to this come spring. Thanks.
