Battery dry, CDI covered in acid.
Just working on my 86 GS 550L. I noticed the battey was pretty dry. and that hose that drains the battery was gone so the acid was all over the CDI. So that is why there is a hose on the battery. Learn from my mistakes. that hose looks important now. I am pretty sure the problem was when I was using the oem R/R. I changed it out to a Polaris R/R and the overcharging stopped. So I cleaned up the wiring and I am about to go cruising.

Just so you know, you also have a VERY rare bike.
There were no GS bikes released to the public that had CDI.

A true CDI is a capacitor that is charged and fires the plugs. The ignitor is just a box of transistors that replaces the points in the old-fashioned INDUCTIVE discharge system.

T.P.I. is a correct term. ignition box, brain box igniter unit. etc... I know what you mean when you use the term CDI. and will not call your attention to the trivial difference.
What you have is a Transistorized Point-less Ignition.
you must run the battery vent tube to the lowest part under the swingarm - lead acid batteries always lose electrolyte and need refilled with distilled water. overcharging makes it spill out worse.
arm and hammer brand baking soda and water will neutralize the acid effect. keep a box near your battery station.SUZUKI , There is no substitute
