80-82 GSX 1100 VS GSX1100 Katana engine number

    Hello everyone!

Been a member for a while but this is my first asking.

Is there a way to tell by the engine number if you are looking at
a Katana genuine 1100 engine or just a standard GSX 1100 engine?

Nice to know if you are in the salvageyard or other places and are looking for a complete
    engine.

    In advance,
    Thank YOU!

Not without pulling the clutch cover so you can get a mirror in to see if the rods are 493 rods. If they are 382 or 492, it is a regular 1100 crank. All Katana cranks, 1000 or 1100 had 493 rods. Rods strong enough that the Kawasaki funny bike guys still use them on their crankshafts. That is how you make a Kawasaki quick & fast, put Suzuki parts in them!! LOL!!
    Ray.

Isn't the rotor also a smaller diameter/thinner wall?
1978 Gs1085 compliments of Popy Yosh, Bandit 1200 wheels and front end, VM33 Smoothbores, Yosh exhaust, braced frame, ported polished head
1983 Gs1100ESD, rebuild finished! Body paintwork happening winter 2017:D

I would rather trust my bike to a technician that reads the service manual than some backyardigan that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix things.

493 is the number to remember.

Very good to know... my motor has 493 rods so I'm glad to know my Kat project has a proper Kat motor

small diameter rotor and small taper crank on 83 1100 kat engines.
i would rather have an 83 E/ES with the large taper and not worry about a little thicker beam rods myself
that small taper will bite you in the arse.....
