gsxr motor into a gs1100/1150 frame

    Guys,

I was looking at oldschoolsuzuki.com and they are talking about motor mounts that will allow them to mount a gsxr motor in a gs frame.

It looks pretty promising to me. Would love to here some input (I do realize that I am kinda going against the whole gs creed)

What would I need (i.e. black box, coils ...) from the donor gsxr if I was to pull a motor for my 1150?

My 1260 is running great now but when rebuild time comes I think a used gsxr motor might be cheaper.

As always thanks for the input! I wouldnt be riding if not for this forum.

Black box would be nice, unless you want to switch to a Dyna setup, then it's not needed. Coils are the same as the 1150's. I think the carbs are interchangable, but I'm not sure, I know you can make gsxr carbs work on gs motors, so I think it could work the other way around too. If you have the flatslides it won't be a problem anyway. Other then that I think it's just a matter of making some motor mounts, and aligning things correctly. Could be a fun project.

Be aware GSXR motors are very short compared to GS motors so you are gonna have a fair bit of left over room inside the cradle.
This can cause a problem with the drive chain as it needs to be extended to reach, if the tension is set to "spec" then the chain ends up quite sloppy and can chop up the front of the swingarm so you may wnat to look at a couple of roller guides of dirtbikes to preserve your frame and swingarm, also try a bandit motor, cheaper and not quite as likely to be flogged to death as a GSXR motor and it is 1200cc as well, remembering a Bandit motor is GSXR based so the same issue applies.

Oh wow, I never thought about that!
I had no idea a bandit 1200 engine would fit in these!

        Wow!

Hi fellow GS'ers! I'm trying to find out if a Bandit 1200 engine will fit in my 1983 Kat. Any ideas of where I can find more info on this conversion?

          Thanks!

Yes they WILL go in & there are motor mounts available to BOLT them in. Look on Ebay & Oldskool Suzuki as someone there sells them. The carbs all interchange on GS & GSXR motors & oil cooled Bandit 1200s. Just KNOW that the GS is by FAR the stronger engine of them all when it comes to durability & power capabilities. If you already have a GS motor, call me at 714--356-7845 & I can help you build something you will be very happy with that will LIVE for a long time. Plus, you will keep the "originality" of the engine your bike came with. Ray.

wow nice parts. it seems the brits really have embraced all the old japanese streetbikes. have you ever read "classic motorcycle mechanics" lots of great sources for this type of stuff. good luck with the engine change...im stayin with my 1150 motor for now, its a durable beast!

I have a parts bike GS750 without a motor and an oil cooled 1100 sounds like a good answer.

                        And what a result!

I'm lookin to do an earlier version of the 750 with wire spoke wheels with dual disks and probably a painted 80/81 GS1100e swing arm. Your idea to do a modern front end and a mono-shock rear suspension are very cool; I'd like to keep the stock look of dual shocks and spoke wheels.

That bike of yours just kills. Nice.

I have been giving thought to my winter project bike and since I want to go inverted front end with the modern wheels and brakes it makes sense to buy a complete bike.
To get the 17's and longer fork I have found a couple 94 GSXR1100 for $2000 running, my plan was to sell off the parts I don't use but this motor swap sounds really good.

Has anyone seen a 81 GS1100 with a water cooled engine?

I know and feel guilty just thinking about it but...
Looking at the parts I would need to buy, wheels, fork, brakes, swing arm, shock plus little things like foot pegs and tach it is cheaper. And that is not including the motor and electrics if I wanted to do the project.

Once I have my stuff, I can sell off what I did not use and make some money back. I see guys selling parts for crazy money and they seem to get it as the adds disappear. For the frame, plastic, seat and all the old stuff from the 81 I can easily see getting $1500 making the $2000 a bargin!
