Front end/rear wheel upgrade on 82 Katana

Hi, I appreciate that this subject has been done to death but have trawled the web and can't seem to find answers to my specific scenario. Thought I'd throw it out to you guys being the experts in this field before committing to eBay purchases.

I have an 82 Katana 1000 - stock except for exhaust. I'm wanting to do a subtle modernization of the front end and rear wheel. I like the conventional fork look, so am thinking SV1000 or Bandit 1200 front end with a matching SV650 rear wheel (I'm thinking the 160 rear tire will look great and will help with clearance issues too). I would consider an SV650 front end but expect the spring rates aren't up to the extra weight. For attaching the triple tree, is it as simple as just buying conversion bearings from allballsracing?

Any comments, suggestions, etc gratefully accepted.

    Thanks in advance.

Tell you how easy the front end is after this weekend - I'm changing stock out for 92 GSXR with 954RR yokes/triples to pull back some of the drop.
I've previously done 1200 Bandit into 1100 Katana and that was fairly easy, however it again required a dog leg triple as its nearly a 3" drop and i wanted to lift the back too which would have produced a freaky/scary trail angle when combined .
78 GS1000C- Now sporting 1100E suspension and numerous goodies
      82 GS750E/82 1100E/ GSXR Frankenstein bike completed
83 1100E "rescue bike" saved from the barn
2008 Bking - Torque Torque Torque
      Next project slowly coalescing

Thanks - will be curious to hear how you got on.

So are you saying the Bandit forks are 3 inches too short and the front end ends up being too low? How does a dog leg triple tree work and how does this correct the problem?

          The are approx dimensions

82 Kat - distance from top of fork to spindle - 800mm
Bandit - distance from top of fork to spindle - 750mm

so thats 50 mm ...... now add the drop from a 19' wheel to a 17" wheel and the difference in radius is 25mm ( 1 inch)

Total = 75mm which is very very marginal for stability on stock rear ride height and may cause ground clearance issues.

By using a dogleg yoke/triple you can pull 1-2" of this back which mitigates the stability and/or ground clearance

I'm going to be trying to fit the front end into my 82 750E rolling chassis this weekend (texas heatwave permitting) and will post pictures as I go along

Ah, OK - I get you. Thanks.

I'd love to see the pics of the front end progress.

I've done web searches for dogleg triples but can't find any info. Still don't understand how this improves things. Do you have a pic or a link for this? Thanks.

              CBR954 Triple clamps:

Lots of people call them gull wing triples instead. The top triple isn't flat, the sides droop down so that you can slide the fork tubes further down and gain some of the lost length back.

Got let down by a supplier so couldn't proceed on this yet..... I'm using a billet top yoke ( triple) same as the pictured 954 but with risers to allow handlebars - or I would be if it wasn't 48 hours late ( and counting).
I've removed the standard bearings from the bottom 954 and given it a good few coats of paint.
bearings ready, GSXR front end ready, just waiting on parts.

once everything's here I'll step by step the process.

                  Makes sense now. Thanks Mark.

Using a billet top - interesting. Thanks, I'll look forward to seeing how things progress.
