1. Pull the oil pan, must remove the exhaust first. Here is what I found. The oil pressure regulator (OPR) is forward of the pickup screen and the only other thing hanging down into the pan. Note how dirty the screen is. It was about 80% to 90% clogged with some kind of gunky stuff. Cleaned out easily with brake cleaner and compressed air.
2. Here is the OPR removed and it's sealing washer:
3. remove the C-clip from the bottom end. There is some slight spring pressure so careful you don't let it fly out. Not a lot of pressure so it's easily held with your finger.
4. Parts all laid out in their correct positions:
5. I went to Ace Hardware and for $.51 bought two 4 mm flat washers which fit inside the big plunger nicely:
thickness:
6. I dropped both washers, which should give me about 1.4 mm shim into the bottom plunger so the spring goes in above them. Just for reference this bike has 10k miles and here is the free length of the spring:
7. All assembled. I used a #2 phillips head screwdriver to push the spring stack down enough to get the C-Clip back in place. I also coated all parts in motor oil before assembly:
8. All back together. If I didn't have to go get the washers the whole job would have taken about 10 minutes once the oil pan is off. Note the screen is clean now:
Hope this helps someone in the future.
