    Where do yall mount oil breather?

    My 82 gs1100e has k&n pod filters so I can no longer run the crankcase breather hose to airbox. It had just a 3/8 hose running down frame rail and stopped just over where chain was. Under hard riding, the hose would mist everything under it with oil. So, I ran a new hose to a plastic "T" and put a filter on one branch (the branch going horizontal) and ran the other part of the "T" to a small hose with cap on the end. I would empty the cap after every drag racing weekend. But, I am now completely rebuilding the engine with brand new sleeves/pistons. It is 1198 MTC. Only .0005" piston side clearance so my blow-by should be very little. Can I just mount the filter on the end of a hose and hang it up above carbs? Or do you think even with the overhaul it will still soak the filter and oil everthing underneath it? How do yall like to run yours? Thanks!

    I run mine to a small k&n filter that sits in a small metal container on the right side of the battery box.

      I run mine to the stock airbox, but have seen a setup similar to your original setup.

      Your very small piston clearance will be great to keep the pistons from rocking in the cylinders, but is it enough clearance to keep them from seizing? (I don't know what stock is, or how much that might need to change with your displacement increase.) The clearance you need to watch to minimize blowby is your piston ring end gap.
      If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

        That is true. The small side clearance is recommended by MTC as their pistons are made of a special metal that does not expand nearly as much as other brand forged pistons.

            No not really, the can just catches the few drops that come out if I don't remember to clean the filter in time, which would be about every month or so.

              I have essentially the same set up on the same bike, except I ran the hose all the way to under the taillight on the RH side of the bike. It doesn't mist anything with oil or anything else, but there is usually some foamy condensation sitting in a low spot in the hose. It has never given me trouble in the years I have owned the bike.

                I have my hose and custom filter sock routed into a seafoam can that I have wrapped in electrical tape and hose clamped to my frame vertically. Referred to by racers as a "puke bottle." I ride my GS extremely hard, & it would mist out oil vapor everywhere when pushing it to near the limits

                  Well I found a nice chrome oil catch can made for motorcycles on Ebay and went ahead and bought it. It has a drain plug and two 1/8" NPT holes on top. I got a chrome 1/8" nipple for the filter and a polished 1/8 NPT to 3/8 barb 90 degree fitting to hook the breather hose to. I got black oil resistant 3/8 hose that is only 1/16 wall and some nice nickel plated 13-15mm hose clamps for the line. Should look good and I will mount breather next to battery.

                    Can you link to the auction? That sounds like something I might want for my 1100E.

                      As it's hidden from view, I just run mine into a pint bottle zip tied to the the frame next to the battery box, even a beer can would work.., no filter necessary really.

                        I am just wanting the bike to be a really nice quality bike even down to the small details. I want it to look nice and clean when I remove the seat.

                          Well the oil breather came in and I got it mounted. Just FYI, the threads are actually 1/4npt, not 1/8npt as the seller says. I mounted it to some 3/8 stainless tubing that I welded into a hole I drilled in frame. It has plenty of room underneath to drain oil into a rattle can cap if need be.

                            You guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill! Road racers use them, there called catch cans. Run the breather hose into a can or container of your choice. Run a hose out the back end of the bike. I put one together at home depot with pvc plastic and some brass nozzles from the plumbing dept and some jb weld. If your not running a air box, there is tons of room in the battery area. Look at pics of the Cooley replica's, check out the hose that comes out in the rear fender/tail section area
