seems you could take the bottom triple and have the fork holes milled out 2mm to accept the BUSA forks then they become a "direct" bolt on also.Or am i missing some other issue here???there's tons of them complete on ebay.

Katman, I'm very interested in the 954 swap. I did some checking and came up with some interesting results.
Bikebandit lists the bearings on a 2002 954 as different part numbers than the 929. However, the 2003 954 has the same part numbers as the 929 and the 2004 1000. I have a feeling that not all of the 954 bearings are the same.

that could be....MIne are 2002 954 triples (top and bottom) I saw a set of 03' 954's on ebay and questioned buddy because they have roller bearings not tapered. He told me they are 03 954's. so it looks like only 02's will fit.
It is easy though, just make sure they are the tapered bearings and you will be ok.

Hi,
Im very impressed at the research here, and am planning a swap based on the info described here.
im squirreling parts away now, and have come across a 89, GSXR750 front wheel or also a 93 model 1100 front wheel.
Do either of these fitup to the 91-93 GSXR750 forks?
Cheers
Ed

89 wheel
Ed both of your wheels will fit the forks you asked about. I have a set of both and swap them back and forth. Steve

sorry about another inane question...
if an 89 front wheel fits, then could it be reasonably assumed an 88 GSXR1100 wheel would fit the above mentioned forks (91-93 - GSXR750)?
thanks for your advice, apologies for diverting the course of this thread.
Cheers

88 gsxr 1100wheel
Not sure Ed. Both the 88-9 gsxr750 front wheels will fit the 93 front end, but the 88gsxr1100 is an entirely different animal than the 88and up 750 or the 89gsxr1100. Unlike the 750 which changed to what is known as a slingshot in 88, the 1100 remained based on the slabside untill the 89 model year. Therefore the 88 1100 had 18 inch wheels(neat looking three spoke design like the17's) which would not fit under the 93 front fender. This is no small problem because I am not aware of any bikes that came with both an USD fork and an 18 inch front wheel. I also believe the axel size is smaller but that could probably be rectified with the later models wheel bearings and internal spacer. STEVE

Ok, more info. I recieved the 954 upper and lower triples and started tearing into the bike.
1) My forks are 50mm at the upper clamp and 54mm at the lower. The 954's fit.
2) Here's a problem. The gsxr lower is slightly longer than the 954 lower from bearing race to bearing race. The gsxr lower fits into the GS steering hear very nicely, while the 954 lower does not seat the upper bearing well.
Here is a pic of the 954 lower with a piece of tape added to illustrate my point. The tape is the same width as the upper bearing and is placed where the upper bearing rests in the GS neck. As you can see, the bearing not only is not fully seated, but quite a bit of it is not making contact. The area to the left of the pen line is where contact is made.
For comparison, I made the same measurements on the GSXR lower and show it for reference.
I swapping back in the GSXR triples. The extra lift was nice, but I can't live with this. If I get some time later I'm going to see about designing GSXR top with a step like the 954.

The 954 set up works perfect on my kat????
you are saying you can't tighten the triples...they are loose?? the top bearing doesn't sit down far enough on the stem to seat and tighten?

I don't doubt that yours work. I wonder if the steering head is different between your bike and mine.

so you can't tighten the triples without sloppy play? If I understand you right...the 954 bearings can't get close enough to make a tight fit witht the races? If that is so why not just turn the stem and take off a few thou (the lip shown) so the top bearing will slide further down the stem?
2 minute job on the lathe
