    '81 GS750 motor into a '97 Katana frame?

Is this a possibility? Picked up the Katana for asong, but the motor is pretty much toast. Have a good '81 750 motor so was wondering if it would work.

Another question I came up with while doing my 500+ miles per day, will the six speed from the '97 work in the '81 cases? Sure would like to have that extra gear.

If not, then I'm going to get real familiar with Swanny's & Billy Ricks' posts. Hate to see good parts go to waste.

Thanks in advance for all the help, Andy.

It should fit in there. Why not sell the 750 mill and buy a tweaked bandit 1200 engine to go in there?

    Talk about your sleeper!

HHMMM! Now you're really trying to get me in trouble. I'll have to think about that. Being a CDL driver, have to be real careful about accumulated citations. My driving record is clean now & really want to keep it that way.

The 97 GSX750F runs a slightly detuned GSXR750 motor(earlier generation ) it is very possible , likely even that there is not enough room to fit an 81 GS750 motor into that frame as GSXR motors are shorter end to end than GS ones, a quick check with a measuring tape should answer your question.

I would bet it will not fit. Now if you were going the other way 8)

Dink, it Won't fit, your right..

I was contemplating putting a spare 81 GS750 motor in my 95' Kat 750, it WOULD NOT fit, I tired, even if I managed the plastics be have to be cut massively..

The Katanas motors are tapered to the rear (gsxr variant), the GS's motor stay the same lines to the rear.

So I managed to find me a GSXR750 motor, drop it RIGHT in NOT one mounting problem..
changed the pickup from the Kat's Blown motor over to the GSXR750 motor, and went to town

Surprised many a smartazz with that bike. 8)

So since the gsxf & gsxr blocks are tapered I'm also guessing the transmissions are not interchangeable. Oh well, more decisions to ponder. The info is greatly appreciated.

They made millions of motors for both the GSXR and Katana so you should be able to pick one up from a salvage yard for pretty cheap. You'll spend less time fooling around and more time riding.

All good points. I've got some friends looking for a gsx or gsxr motor. Will see what the bike gods determine I get.

removed the engine from the bike today, pulled the oil pan & found the remains of I'm thinking the oil pump drive gear from the pickup screen. After removing the valve cover found the left side of the top end (if you're sitting on the bike) had been starved for oil. Both cams & rockers were trashed. The good news is the bottom end looks to be in good condition. So just have to find some new rocker arms & cams & it should be ok. Haven't got the clutch off yet, so may find some interesting stuff there tomorrow. I love having something to look forward to, hehehe.

If you buy new cams and rockers the price will be about the same as a complete 2nd hand engine.

Good point Robin. I'm in no hurry so will keep an eye open for a deal of some sort. Of course finding a Bandit 1200 motor for cheap would really be nice. We can dream.

If the oil pump was trashed I would think Probably have bearing damage too.. Look for a replacement motor

Oil Pump is ok. It was either 1st or 2nd gear, will know which one after I get the cases split. Figure the oil starvation happened when the gear pieces filled up the pickup screen. Will check on parts this week while also looking for another motor. Sure like the Bandit 1200 idea, but what would you call it, a 7-11+1? Everyone have a good week, off to Kissimee, FL about noon tomorrow for a delivery on Wednesday.
