I bought a 1980/81 set of gs1100 cases that have been nicely machined to accept the sleeved 1260 block that also was included in the deal. The cases and block and 3 pistons cost me $450 plus shipping from Quebec Canada. I bought them from Claude Thibault on ebay about 6 months ago.
I also have a 1981 1100 crank with around 5,000 miles on it that I sent to APE to have welded. I also have a stock 1980 1100e motor with 14,279 miles on it sitting in my driveway (a 1980 GS1100L) and a complete 1980-81 engine gasket set. I also have the shop manuals and Clymers for this year as well and can use some of Bike Bandit's diagrams online if I need clarification.
MY PLAN IS TO TAKE APART THE STOCK MOTOR AND TRANSFER EVERYTHING OVER PIECE BY PIECE, SCREW BY SCREW, SUBSTITUTING IN THE WELDED CRANK.... AND USING THE NEW GASKETS.
Since I have no experience putting an engine together, (BUT HAVE READ HERE IN THE FORUM THAT IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT TO ACCOMPLISH) AND I have tools and am somewhat mechanically competent PLUS I have you the GSR's to see me thru it.... I figure I can pull it off.... What do you think? If response is positive I will post pics next.....
