Designing my own Rectifier/Regulator

The device is REALLY simple. That's to say i'm ordering parts already so I can build one. The suggested board layout is easy to follow. The most difficult part may be wiring up the SCR's and rectifiers properly as they are done "point to point" instead of on the perfboard.

Gimme a week and I'll be able to tell you exactly how easy it is. ;-) What's great is the documentation that cberkeley has written explains in detail exactly what you're doing with this circut. Speaking of which.

cberkeley, What voltage do you have your r/r putting out?

I have mine set at 14.4V and it holds it +/-0.2V at 4K RPM and the R/R runs just on the high side of warm <160*F so the thermometer strip I have on the heatsink does not measure it.
My Stator leads (insulation) are quite brittle though I recon they are the originals, some 23-years old. If I end up with a problem this is where it's going to be not the R/R. Don't panic, I have no intention of getting you folk to build your own stators:-D
Ok you're right the SCR's and bridges may be a little challenging especially to solder as the sheer mass of the things sink away quite a bit of heat.... persevere with a good soldering iron, these beasts can tolerate some heat. Reallythough the aluminum work maybe the most miserable.
Just found on the drawing of the suggested heatsink, the dimension for the LED hole (location of adjust hole relative to LED hole) does not coinside with what's suggested in the perfboard layout, Just a minor thing, will change that in the dwg tomorrow. Just be aware of it, or use two longer leads to mount the LED.

By the way, Cletus, with regard to the aluminum work I plan to use a product called HTS-2000 http://newtechnologyproducts.net/index.asp to construct the box from aluminum plate ... It is supposed to be a VERY easy product to work with, and requires far less heat than would melt the aluminum -- should make life much easier!

Would really like one of the other people on the forum who have seen the plan to respond to this question. I've been around electronics for so damned long I'm biased into thinking it's really a simple gizmo with 14 parts on the board (perfboard) and five on the heatsink/case. Normal hand tools, a digital multimeter and a decent soldering iron. The case as I did it, would require some aluminum cutting, drilling, filing and epoxying.

Judging from the picture of your protoype, it looks pretty simple. I'm pretty handy with electronics, but I have little background in the area - only what I've read from a few books. I'm confident that I can put this thing together. Putting it together without frying something while soldering? That's another question...

I'm pretty sure that I'll be purchasing your diagram shortly.

Greg ordered the parts yesterday (for both of us), and we'll be receiving them late next week ... Soooo the goal is to try and get together next weekend and knock them both out, after which we'll let you guys know what the charge will be for pre-assembled examples of Cletus' creation.

As I mentioned before, we won't be building these things for anyone that hasn't already bought the plans from Cletus (we'll wait for his verification before each "build"), and there will of course be a nominal assembly charge to make it worth our while ... but it will be very reasonable for those who don't want to build it themselves.

Thanks for the update. I have every intention purchasing Cletus' plans and building this thing myself, but I am interested in field reports; especially the ease of acquiring the necessary parts and any other issues to watch out for along the way. Greg is always meticulous about these things and usually makes a thorough post if called upon.
