A little tip for you guys loosing for a MOSFET R/R on the cheap...
Try searching ebay for "Foreman regulator" or "Rubicon regulator". The Rubicon and Foreman used the FH009 version, which has a lower current capacity, but still plenty for a GS charging system. I recently picked up one for $20.50 shipped.
This one is not as cheep but still a fair deal...http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Rubico...#ht_500wt_1202Ed

BikingBluenoser
Got one!
I managed to get a SH232 for $17.95 inc shipping. Hopefully that will fix my sputtering problem (if not, at least I have upgraded my r/r!).
Now to address the other issues...
Thanks for the replies!

Can anyone show me an example of a decent priced, just plug in and go R/R? I dont want to have to futz with rewiring things. If its a bit more expensive ($40-$50) I'm ok with that.

You can get new stator (not from suzuki) for about $100 and a decent used R/R (shindengen) for about $25 BUT you still have to straighten out connection issues. From your other post, it seems someone has already had a go at this problem. The stock R/R was/is mounted just above swingarm pivot- is yours still there????1981 gs650L

You may have to join 5 wires is all.... Let me know if you want one. I suspect your current RR is on Bullet connectors if the loom is still stock so should be pretty easy.

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I just have no idea which Honda r/r I should be looking for. I've seen tons of different part numbers, read BassCliff r/r PDF, and read a bunch if threads. Everyone uses something different. Is there a member/vendor that can buy a good Honda R/R from?
EDIT: I found these. I'm assuming either of these will work properly correct?

No matter what you get, you must redo some connections (eliminate headlight loop, decent grounding )
Here's an example of an ebay item - shindengen sh-232- same as I use and bolts to existing R/R location under airfilter box. very durable unit, probably indestructible, honest!

I was able to pick up a SCH530-12 for $13 shipped on eBay. It is a 6-wire, 20amp from what I've read so that should suffice for a bike that well get driven not very often.

The previous owner of my bike seems to have replaced some electrical components as I have an aftermarket R/R, and the ignitor has GS650 written in white writing on the side so I assume it came off of a junkyard bike.
Now that I will be completely rewiring my bike, should I stick with this R/R? There doesn't seem to be too much information about it online. Part number is TMR1002U. I see ebay listings that list this part for a KZ650, KZ900, etc.
I appreciate any advice.1983 GS650G

That ignitor is correct for all the shafty 650s- worth some bucks. That R/R is USELESS not oem- use as xmas ornament, I got 2 of those in parts lots and both were defective- don't risk your stator, get a used shindengen for $20.1981 gs650L
