    Painting Update

I poked around on ebay for awhile trying to find a decent front fender, but nothing jumped out at me so I ended up just working the stock piece up a bit. I cut off the back about a quarter inch from the inside bracket and hammered the metal down around it. A few passes with filler and it was ready - I think it looks alright.

I layed a few layers of fiberglass in the tail piece to plug the holes I made from grinding off the reflector plates and to strengthen the whole thing up.

Pics of fender, tail piece and other parts ready for primer:

I did two coats of ppg epoxy primer followed by several coats of a ppg high build primer. I've got one coat of the high build in these pics.

Right now I'm using flex agents in the primer for the plastic stuff and not on the tank, fairing, and fender. I'm not sure if that's the way to go or not. I plan on continuing this for the top coat and clears unless anyone has any better advice. Here's one last one of the fairing:

I don't want it if I can't get it looking sharp, does it look like a good ceramic coating could hide the blemishes?

What did you do with the Yoshi in your first picture?

Incredible work..what color paint is in store for the bodyparts?

I'm not a professional painter but I'm pretty sure you don't need flex agent when painting ABS plastic. The flex stuff is need for soft parts like bumper fascias but not for motorcycle fairings and side covers.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I figured I might be able to get away without the flex agents and mixing two seperate batches at every step, but the seat trim in particular is extremely flexible. I don't really know how to get around that one part. Plus, the paint guy told me the ppg epoxy should have the reducer in it to go on to plastic - and the directions seemed to agree.

As for the pipes, I ended up getting these
                http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...K%3AMEWNX%3AIT

not really sure how to treat them yet, they seem to be in good shape, no dents but they're painted silver and there is some pitting - bought 100 lbs of medium grit sand from HD. I guess I'm planning on blasting them, and then prepping them for either black paint (for one season) - or ceramic coating. That bridge is slightly down the road, right now I've got them hanging over my workbench for inspiration - I couldn't believe how light the box was that they arrived in - a fraction of stock.

As far as color scheme, I was originally going to set the bike up as the blue cooley, but I think I've been won over by the red Yosh racer look. Either that or something in the same vein. Since I'm a first-time-painting-anything-ever sorta guy, I think I'm already a bit over my head and will probably just copy the yosh. Which brings up a question.

What's a good red? I may end up just finding the ducati paint codes and giving them to my shop. I went to chicago cycle today to see what reds tickled my fancy, the yamahas and the ducati's had some colors I liked, though there was a decent red 944 in the parking lot... I searched a bit to find the yosh paint codes but I'm not even sure they exist.

Update. I finally had two days off and used them to paint. I was able to get all three colors on and the clear coat in the required 24-hour period.

I also shot the side panels and seat trim, but I'm not planning on using them. Overall I'm pleased with the results. By the end, I was finally getting comfortable with my gun and was even able to shoot quality flowing, smooth clear coats.

I'm putting several decal designs together and will get them made up locally. In a week I'll put them on, shoot a couple more layers of clear, and polish everything up. Will be glad to be done.

Now, on to getting the rest of the bike together - really hope to have at least a little riding time this season before the weather shuts me down.

Very nice work. Are you sure you've never done something like this before? You're getting great results. The red yosh racer is one of my favorite GSs, nice choice.

It is my first bodywork/paint job project. I would have liked to document the painting more for others along the way, but I was already nervous about trying to get it all done in 24 hours.

I definitely had my challanges along the way, I had to repaint the red and white on the tail section after trying to fix a blemish - I also had to repaint the bottom red area of my fairing after the first coat of clear produced some nasty deep crazing on the inside curve.

I'm getting ready to put it all back together - I have some questions about my exhaust and jetting:

The bike came with two bolt-on yosh cans on what looked like the original header. I bought a yosh 4:1 and was planning on using one of the cans on it. Is that cool? - I don't need to change the guts of the can or anything to adjust the flow?

Second question. I know this has been covered and recovered so I'm frankly a little afraid to ask. Am I buying a dynajet kit here or is there some really good bet on jetting someone can give me. I don't mind buying the kit, but wonder if my mods aren't common enough (stock VM's, KN-type pods, above exhaust) - that someone might have the magic numbers for me. Thanks.

The bike is looking GREAT! As far as the jetting with the pods and a 4-1 Yosh my bet would be on the Stage #3 kit but I'm sure with some more digging you could source the needed jets right here...

You can buy a jet kit, but with VMs it is not that hard to find out what you need. It does take some time and effort. Different pods flow differently, exhausts are an unknown, every situation is different. Because of this the kits err on the rich side, you need to fine tune it anyway so why not do the whole thing yourself?

As a starting point, probably keep the stock 15 pilot jet, up the main jet from your stock 95 to around 120 something. The pilot may need to be upped one size.

You will probably need to raise the jet needles a clip position or two.

Just take the time to do it right.

Do you know the procedure to determine what you need?

If by procedure you mean something other than plug chops then no. I hadn't quite gotten that far but was planning on rereading the tuning guides. I believe you essentially divide the throttle up and chop under each circuit - can't remember if it's top down or bottom up with the VMs. Was also thinking about getting a color tune.
