Just read your entire thread... great job so far. I had actually watched one of your YouTube videos when I was shopping for a 1000G. The one I bought is in Colorado, but should be here around the end of the month. Like you, I can't wait to get on it & ride.

Interesting trivia (for me) seeing as how you have a Honda 550F and a GS1000G. I traded in a 1975 550F for my then new 1000G in 1981. I had bought the 550F from my current wife's then-current husband a year earlier. He owned the only bike shop in town (and I didn't know either of them at the time, met her years later). Small world.

Looking forward to some more updates!

Thanks. I know what you mean.. Have a like story about meeting my wife. We traveled the same circle of friends for like 20 years living just a few towns apart, and only met when we were in our Mid thirties.

Yea, I love my 550f.. Fixed the carb issue and some others, she runs but bog's about 2k.. So I put it in the garage until late fall when I have the time and money to get back to it. GL with your GS.. Hope she is a gem.

A good running 1000G is a hard bike to complain about. Get it riunning right, and my guess is that you will love it.

Well I have been working on the carbs, having a heck of a time with the air box for some reason. Also any one know where I can get a chart of the vacuum lines and where they go? I don't have any in the manual I have in fact it does not mention them at all.

Happy New Year to you all!

              Hi Scott,

              Happy New Year!

For the info you need about the hoses please to go Basscliff's web site and look up his write up on "where do these hoses go?" (or something to this effect). Cliff has done you right with his write up and the info is there for you to reference.

Thank you its been a while since I went there and forgot about that. I will check it out.

I just came in from another 2 hours out there trying to get the stupid air box on so now I am done. Pods it is. I don't care if it runs crappy, I will just deal with it. I can't stand those air boxes. There is no excuse for them to be so hard to get on. It should not take weekends on end to get a stupid air box on. Can you tell I am frustrated with it?

                Scott...

                Edit:
I put the air box on as good as I could get it. The two inside air boots are only on at the top, however its good enough for now. I could not get the bike started no matter what I tried, well I noticed tho I had the choke cable pulled all the way up the choke was not on. Looking at it deeper I found that the clip came off the linkage and it popped off and so manually holding the choke closed it tried to start. I gave it a couple shots of starter fluid and she started, and blippling the throttle I was able to keep it running. Once it stopped I checked and it looks like only 2 of the cylinders are firing. So in the morning I will have to look at that.

Do these bikes come with electronic ignition? I don't seem to have any points. Some thing else I have to look at. I did check out Cliffs site and found where the hoses go. I thought the two vent hoses had to be hooked up to the vacuum line for some reason. Good to know they don't.

Two other things I am hoping to get help with.

                  1) I would like the mounting bracket for the Shadow Royal fairing I have, I plan to use it on long distance runs. I have a group of guys here that goto the mountains for a week over the summer, things like that.

                  2) I need a right hand side cover. Searching ebay and GL has yielded nothing to date.

                  Thanks,
                  Scott..

Just finished reading through your thread. I just purchased an 80 1000G that could be your twin. I'm sorry to hear you're having such problems with this. I was pretty lucky with mine. I purchased it from the second owner who only had it for 2 months. He replaced the points with an electric ignition, new plugs, etc., but still couldn't get it to run right. I spent a few hours on BassCliff's site, purchased $5 weather stripping from Napa, sealed the airbox, spent some money on o-rings and the bike runs like a top. I couldn't be happier.

I really hope you keep after it. I was really hoping to get to the point where you got her fired up and ran around town...

                    Perhaps soon to follow..

BTW, I think it's kinda funny you are missing the right side cover... I can't seem to find a left cover to save my life.

                    Good Luck,
                    Brian

Well after a long time its finally running. It sat covered all this time other projects and funds got in the way. However she is almost road ready.. Can't wait to get her out. Excuse the mess in the garage, we are refinishing a bunch of tables etc so things a bit messy at the moment.

Well just got back from a short run. Its back firing a bit, and the idle is hard to get dialed in, I started with around 1200 rpm and when I got back it was up to 2500 and would not come down. Also it bogs when I give it gas.. So still have some sorting out to do. I just don't know where to begin. I am going to go and look over the clymers manual I have for it and see if that gives me some ideas.

                          Scott..

Well I found that the mixture screws needed to go in a full turn and I also found that gas was not getting to the bowls. I put the shut off to Reserve and it fills the gas line, where as on PRI or On it seems to trickle out. So a petcock rebuild is in my future. However Mother nature is really having some fun with me. Now that it seems to be running good, I can't really get out and test it well because its a 105 degrees out.. Errr well it should cool off this weekend enough for me to take it out for a good run to see how it does.

                              not so noob mistakes

Hey man don't worry about making mistakes.I've had my GS for 15 years now and I STILL forget to block the vaccum pipe before trying to balance the carbs-if you don't block it with a phillips screwdriver/piece of bar- the bike won't start with the tank off period, oh the fun I've had(not to mention the swearing) when I take the tank off, burn my fingers getting the damn screws out of the inlet tracts for the balancers,then-WHY the *&^k won't you start etc.,to look down to see that little pipe smirking at me as if to say"forgot me again didn't you dumbass".Like everyone else has said take your time,THINK,and if it still goes wrong walk away for a while.it might help to have a shallow container full of nearly boiling water say about 1/4 inch deep that you can put the airbox rubbers into for 5-10 minutes before you assemble the airbox/carbs,it softens the rubber and allows those pesky middle 2 to fit better.Just a thought-GOOD LUCK and keep trying.Johnny

As others here will tell you the rebuild kits are probably no better (or maybe worse) than just cleaning what you already have. The key to these bikes, and many bikes, is to clean the carbs as clean as they can be. It's actually not as difficult as it sounds and can make a huge difference to how well your bike performs.

It almost makes me sick to the stomach that you can buy a bike as good as that for $300! No way can you get a bargain like that where I live! Get it running right and you have a surprisingly good bike there. My '82 GS1100G surprises me every time I ride it.
