Bringing my '79 GS850 to life:
I have finally started to work on my 850. I pulled the carbs and took them to a m/c mechanic friend of mine to rebuild. The gas in the bowls was green and smelled awful. When I pulled the gas tank off I noticed some rust in the bottom. I have seen some stuff out there to re-coat the tank and was told that is the way to go. It will also need the carb boots. This is just the start. Probably kinda boring for most of you but I am damn EXCITED!!Tags: None

A couple of tips...
Get a VM carb O-ring kit from cycleorings.com, and also get the large O-rings for the intake pipe boots. Do not allow your mechanic to install aftermarket carb kits in the carbs unless parts like the float needle and seat are corroded beyond repair (unusual). Regarding the tank, do a search here and educate yourself on derusting and coating. There is lots of information on these topics in the archives. Most people waste a bunch of money on inferior carb kits, and line their tanks with Kreem (which is junk). Learn to use the search function here and you will get the proper repair info and you will save a bunch of money too.Ed
