    Bad sign on the sides…

Oil starvation during high revs, due to poor maintenance.
The bike has scuff marks on both sides, plus a lot of small stuff missing, so I have to figure it was owned and abused by a meathead.
Don't pay good money for an abused bike, like I did.
I just bought some used camshafts on ebay, and a new cam follower. I think the bike will run real good after I get those in.

Hey Buffalo Bill........good to see you found your engine knock issue. Although that camshaft looks rough it could certainly be a lot worse for sure.
As well, I don't think you got a bad deal on your Katana. That engine does not have many miles on it so it will still have lots of life in it once you get the camshaft replaced.
Once you have it going you'll have a very good bike for the money you spent.
Like I said before..........Suzuki usually designs and builds strong and long lived engines.
      It'll look after you.

        Two week wait…

Hey I got the last little part, $45 for this…
Can you guess which is the new part?
I replaced both intake and exhaust cams with salvaged cams, because even the original intake cam had pits on the lobes.
Should have the bike on the road by Saturday afternoon.

Great thread, makes me pine for another one.

I put 50,000 miles on one of these back in the day. '89 GSX750F. I road it hard but took good care of it. I drag raced it best was (11.22), triple digit runs to Vegas, went to Mexico on it, had plenty of mountain sport riding along with years of commuting. This bike still lives today at my bother in laws house...

            Oops…waitin' for more parts…

Seems I was too hasty and spoil't some carb seals, found out just as I was adding some gas for the first start up. Carbs started to leak an' I din't want a Bar-B Q'd Kat in da garage. Another week waitin for dem parts…
Meantime these came in da mail. I'm an old man an I get carpel numbness easy. So I put gel grips on and bought some end weights off one of dose Hiyababy's. These are full of LED, an just as heavy as LED ZEPPELIN I.
See here, da big Hiyababy's on the left, stock in the middle, and da little one's what some squid put on dere.

              Had time today!

After working for food and shelter all week,
I had time to assemble the bike and start it up. Smoky and noisy? Oops, forgot to tighten up the exhaust clamps at the engine. Started up and ran great and I synch'ed the carbs!
Can't ride it yet, I got a sticky new radial rear tire: Bridgestone Battlax BT016 150/60-17. The standard rear rim for the '93 is only 3.5" and is meant for bias-ply tires. This radial is molded for a 4.5" rim. I got a newer Katana rim off a '97 that's 4.5" wide. It should bolt right in, just waiting for it to be delivered come Wednesday.

                Goal fixation…

Oops! I should have seen this coming. The rotor bolt pattern changes after '97. I gotta buy a post '98 rotor. Bummer, I thought I could use the one I had. I bolted up the wheel anyway but I can't do a safe road test without a rear brake. But the wheel and tire fit just fine!

                  Nice

                  Looking good Bill!

Let's just hope there are no more "Oops, I need xxx part." moments!

Stellar job so far, could we perhaps see a video of the beast in action when it's done?

                    No video camera…

Thanks Macguyver! No video camera in the house at this time.
The rain stopped, so I took a short ride up and back on the local hiway. Sounds real mean!
I didn't like riding on wet pavement without a rear brake, so will wait for it to dry. I did some low speed circles in a nearby parking lot and that felt good. I'm not used to this bike yet so, I will take it slow.
I'm going to have to paint this bike soon, but not today.
I have a used rotor ordered already, only $39 with shipping! That's way better than $160 - $200 for new!

$39 with shipping? Wow, that is a deal and a half!

So, what color are your planning for the bodywork?

Glad you asked! Everybody else can take a nap…
Really hard to decide if you want to include graphics. Sorry, I'm a fine art major.
The original design and colors are a relic of the year of production, and the way people were thinking during that year, so I decided to replicate the scratched and ruined side decals, in paint. I will probably buy colors as close as I can.
It's debatable but I don't want to be frozen in indecision.

I like the color graphics of the 1988 750 Katana allot as well, and that would be my second choice, and am still considering it.

                          Finished, running GREAT!

Well, the last mechanical issue is resolved, a rear brake rotor came and I have it on. Fits proper. I have a Bridgestone Battlax BT016, 150/60-17 radial on there, and it's plenty sticky. Most of my time on this project was spent waiting for parts!
I took a 70 mile ride up and down my favorite country roads here. It works fabulous, bumpy stuff no problem, handles so well I don't have to lean much. Engine has way more power, and it handles way better than I can use on these country roads.
I got this bike to use as a track bike and it's going to do that very well.

That'll make a nice little track hack. Enjoy!
