Wes Cooley back from the dead (with a twist!)

Here's what I am starting with:

The bike WAS RACED back in '79-'81 thus the bracing on the frame and swing arm. (note the 3 lower shock mounts)

The 1100ED engine that will be going into it. Just started with cleaning.

    Before...

    After...

    Before...

    After...

Hmmm... Isn't that a dirt tire in the back? Never seen that color on a Cooley either. Subscribed!

Great job with the clean up!

+1 What kind of racing was it used for? I bet this bike could tell some stories.

The bike was raced at Sears Point, Laguna Seca and Monterey. IIRC.
The dirt tire was installed by the PO to move it around.

          More from 1-20-2011...

For the 1100ED engine to fit, this mount had to be removed...

Cut it off. Ground the welds down. Wire wheeled the rust spots. Cleaned up with Roloc pads and 220 sandpaper.
Degreased and primed with Cold Galvanizing Compound. Followed with gray primer. Then, low-gloss hi-temp (500 degree)
oil and gas resistant engine paint.

          Where the factory mount was...

Going to polish the aluminum swing arm tomorrow.

Nice work. Looks better in black IMO.

Testarossa, after looking at your L build, want to come over and spray this one?

                Hmm...these photos look vaguely familiar.
I'm already following your build on "that other" forum. Guess I'll follow it here, too!

Ran into some problems today. Only had a couple of hours to do... anything to it.
I have never liked the looks of the side covers on the 1000S. (YUK!)
I can modify the frame to allow any of these fit.
I just threw some parts on it to see how it might look.
Which of these style's look the best?

                  1)

                  2)

                  3)

Thanks for any and all opinions.

nice progress ; I wish I could make as much progress

BTW, what are you going to do for the lower left side engine mount?

Where are you at? I'm not sure that my painting skills are worth too much travel expense. Thanks for the kind words.

BTW I vote for the 750E sidecovers. They follow the lines of the frame well. The 850 comes a not so close second.

Not sure if I am even going to add that side at all.
On another one of my swaps, neither of the bottom mounts are there and it has never had a problem without them.

I have another bigger problem, I am going to cut my 1100ED frame up for parts.
I am going to remove what is left of the rear foot peg/ exhaust mounts in these pic's on the S frame:

                            And weld these on:

I have decided to use the foot pegs and passenger pegs from the 1100ED on this frame.

                              7981GS,

I vote for the 750 side covers and I have the frame peg mount from an 83 ED all ready cut off so you don't have to cut up a good frame. That is if it is good.
