      Congratulations ! Looks like it's starting to warm up for riding time. Now if I could get mine going. I've been having a shot a Scotch every night and the bikes still not running. Cheers.

        130 kms with three night rides before the total loss electrics ran down enough to not start her on the button. have her on the charger now and firing up with no problems. soldered the wires back onto their contacts on the sidestand switch, and replaced the insulator rubbers of the instrument cluster as they'd been run without the flat washers and were flogged out.

        road use has shown up brinnelling in the steering head bearings. the straight ahead position to either direction clicks over like a ratchet from centre and isn't particularly pleasant. it's not as horrid as BLUE's (stripped her down to inspect tonight. not pretty) and i noticed on saturday that tinkerbell has the symptoms as well. in the morning i'm going to knock a sixteenth of a turns preload off it and persevere till the gear arrives from partshark on monday. if it's an improvement, i'll leave replacing them till i get back from sydney. if not then i'll order a new set and chuck em in.

        should have repacked the headstock after all and woulda spotted them then, but still glad i got her on the road as with anzyela off the road while babbitts sports centre bugger around it gives marlene my beloved MZ a break. babbitts so far seem almost as competent as the vincent owners club spares company so i hope to hell they get their act together and redeem themselves quickly.

            airfilter is in providing enough a jump in power that the 9 year old oil and whatever properties it contains has the clutch slipping under power. she is no longer asthmatic and gutless.

            and the clutch cable has stretched/half snapped/freyed/commit the first stage of hari kiri. a brand new example that came free with my gsx1100's workshop manual shall go on tomorrow. got me home from my shopping trip to buy some stones green ginger wine (another flu. i'm feeling like total ****.) however so it seems the bike has some level of tolerance for me. this in spite of having jiggled my RG250W's key in the ignition to get her to start as i misplaced her keys when i popped the seat for battery recharging duties. wasn't quite with it at the time and much running in and out of the house to try and find the buggers followed till i gave up and got gamma on it. found em later this evening in the dark two feet from where i park the daily driver relevant to that week. would seem a hot bath and some throat burning alcohol makes me more observant.

            into the back yard i pushed her and plucked the seat (have found by luck the gsx1100's original key fits the seat and steering locks. real high security stuff. joy!), tank, airbox, carbs, gearshift and starter cover, and backed out all the camcover cap retainers. went to the intake manifold screws and had to drive three of them out hammer and punch style. my impact driver simply massacred the cross in the two outermost screws and it got worse from there. all eventually relinquished and the rock hard rubbers and cooked and flattened o-rings are on the bonnet of my datsun. banged a quartet of coke bottle lids in two socks to plug off the intake ports till the last two manifold rubbers arrive circa tuesday. stator cover came free next and old dead stator was supplanted by the new electrex item. not hooked the wires up yet and might plumb in a quick release three pin plug so if the engine needs to come out i'm not fighting with bullet crimp terminals. new gasket greased on both sides and into place she went.

            starter cover back on and pulled the gear indicator pole plug as the light for 5th is flickering out at speeds over 90. swapped the plug, contact plunger and spring between engines and stretched a little more tension out of the spring. gearshift cover back on then up to the leaking cam cover. half moon seals may as well have been whittled from oak for all their level of supple. new items in and the replacement gasket in situ, then cam cover bolted back down. theres a really nice feeling fitting new stamp cut gaskets that a home made gasket can never match. as good as watching sealant squelch out from between two milled mating surfaces.

            few fiddly items i can still fit out of what arrived yesterday like the airbox to carb boots. marlene can handle commuting for a few days till the manifolds arrive, bless her little socialist soul. might see if i can chase down a twenty litre drum of engine oil rather than the 4 litre bottles i keep procuring. do a change on the entire four stroke fleet in one fell swoop. be nice if i felt a little less under the weather.

              Engel,

              I'm enjoying the tales of your progress. You get well. I think I could one of those reliable socialist (the bike,right?) mistresses.

                we're painted.

                got some polishing to do on the cases and the two lower badges to replace. oil change done and new plugs in. the graceful among you might kindly overlook the seat condition.

                  Nice paint! I'm a bit partial to a nice metalic blue. Is the stripeing painted or decals? You have been working this bike at a serious clip. I envy your progress. Me gracious? No way. To bad we don't live closer, I have a single chrome bar end I'd give ya. Is that "blue" with the heart of "Blackie", or the other way around? I lost track.

                    the two blues are paintyed with the gold an adhesive. then cleared over. colours were matched to a side cover from dads K1 750, painted 35 years ago by the same guy. dark blue is a little lighter than stock and the light blue is a metallic rather than a solid, sky blue, but thats what i asked for and am very pleased with it.

                    she's BLUE in near all bar the frame as far as running components are concerned. BLACK got one fork leg and shock, the front calipers, guages, and the panniers in, and donated all her bodywork to the cause. doesn;t ride too bad either and i think she'll see a bit of service as is. i have a penchant for "half finished" projects that get put into use and never fully beautified, but they aren't made to sit still and be ogled as much as they are for riding.never been quite that prissy.

                        two minds on them still. a mate suggested bumber blacking spray and dad mentioned tyre shine spray but to be honest i'm not that fussed and think i'll leave them alone.

                        swapped over to my spare carbs tonight and she goes like the clappers. was a little blubbery on the last set but now gets up and boogies. might even be better on fuel too.

                        need someone with one of these in good running order to ask a few questions please: standard 130/90-17 rear tyre and a normal 19 front tyre, what revs is your bike doing at 35 mile per hour in 1st through fifth gears please? my tacho is a bit haywire and i'd like to know what she's doing through the cogs when i'm on the move and up it.

                        the rims and lower crankcase cappings didn't polish up too badly and while not perfect, i'm comfy with her appearance. try and got a few pics for ya's in the next few days.

                        cheers, glen.

                          More work to do…

                          Glad to see it running, but you gotta polish that engine.
                          It'll feel damn embarrassing sitting next to a new bike or car.

                          Yeah I got a 1100G myself and it's about my favorite bike, and no it don't look perfect.

                          Standard tires are 130/90-17, and 100//90-19.
                          I put some Shinko 712's on mine, and they stick great! Had it out for a track day too, can't test 'em harder than that.

                            she got polished bill. but i haven't taken any new pics is all. embarassed isn't much of an issue as with what i wear, few if any notice "that motorcycle under that idiot wearing sandals is not as shiny as mine"

                            couldn't get you to take yours for a run when you find a minute and do a rev check at 35 or 60 mph in top could i? as mentioned, my tacho is pretty haywire and i'd like to know what rpm she's spinning at so i can calculate what i'm doing to her under hard acceleration as i tend to heed the redline when i know where it is.

                            a company i work with sells me tyres at wholesale so the continental Conti-GO! pair that are on her were quite cost effective and should handle my trip with ease.

                            gathered together some basics tonight (few spare bulbs, sparkplugs, tools, a needle and seat and o-rings) and am about to get motivated and finish packing for tomorrow. need a good night sleep too so must be off.

                            cheers, enga.

                                For 5th gear only…

                                My tach gets funky too, between 3500-4000 RPM, it jumps between those two. But I just happened to check these because of a slipping clutch.

                                On the track I chose 8000RPM for my shift point and got:
                                3rd gear at 8000 = 70MPH
                                4th gear at 8000 = 85MPH

                                With new clutch friction discs and springs I got this:
                                3500RPM = 55MPH
                                4000RPM = 60MPH
                                4500RPM = 65MPH
                                4800RPM = 70MPH
                                5100RPM = 75MPH
                                5400RPM = 80MPH
                                5700RPM = 85MPH
                                6000RPM = 90MPH
                                6300RPM = 95MPH
                                6600RPM = 100MPH
