    1981 gs 550 et

I just picked up a 81 550 et with 14.3k miles for $500, and it's very straight. So far I can tell it needs an air filter which I was wondering if I could cut my own since the element is there? Also the intake boots are ripped in half and I was wondering if there was a place to buy those for a decent price. Basically I'm going into college soon and shouldn't have bought a motorcycle so I want to fix it up as best I can and sell it for probably what I'll end up putting into it after registration and the cost of a new tire.

Part Shark is the cheapest place for OE parts I've found. For the filter, yea, cut your own since it's just a flat sheet of fine mesh filter foam.

    Good luck.

I tore the carburetors apart and thoroughly cleaned them, making sure to remove every jet carefully and use a jet cleaning tool to get all the gunk and grime out of them. Then I blew every passageway out with compressed air. Then I purchased all good used intake boots with new Suzuki OEM O rings, along with a brand new Suzuki OEM air filter. Then I painstakingly put it back together with new fuel, vacuum, and vent hoses. I bought 2 and a half gallons of fuel for the bike and filled the tank up pretty far. I tested that the prime function works and the On and Reserve positions do not let fluid out without the vacuum. Everything seems like it should be going swimmingly right? I crank the bike over and absolutely nothing happens. I already checked if it had good compression by the way. I sprayed lots of starting fluid into the air box directly, with the filter removed, fanning the throttle. That produces no more then firing on a single or rarely two cylinders for short moments. I know the carburetors are sealed well, the rubber is in good condition and I know to position the air box tightly against them along with putting them all the way into the intake boots. Where do I go now? Also I forgot to mention the coils look excellent but I havn't measured their output, do I do that at the plug cap?
