I've been trolling on this forum for long enough looking through old posts trying to find some answers to what I should do and I finally figured I should just ask.
OK here it is. The good - I bought my 850 whoo hoo!!!!, the bad (possibly) - it was partially disassembled. The PO was going through the process of rebuilding when he... don’t know. I’m not too sure why he quit. Anyway, he sorrowfully sold his bike to me and now I have it and I feel a little stuck. I'm not sure if I should go forward and put back together or go further, take engine out and split lower case. I should have prefaced this with - I've not done this before! I’m not necessarily a rookie, but some of this has got me questioning if I’ve gone in over my head. Too late!
I have no reason to believe that there are any problems with the crankshaft or anything else down there, but I don't know. It was disassembled by the PO who said it was running before he got it. It has 34,000 miles on the odometer. The other thing is that it's been sitting for a long time. More than 3 years with just some paper towels in the holes. There is a lot of dirt that I need to clean up and stuff. Will a flush out with some oil do the trick? So back to my question, where do I start?
Any advice on cleaning the engine if I don’t have a big tub to degrease in?
Thanks in advance for your advice. I'm looking forward to some good years ahead with this bike.
