    FullMetalone's 81 GS750

    Thought I should make a thread here instead of bumping my intro thread again and again. I bought a 1981 GS 750 for 100$. Came with a Clymer manual and not much else. The exhaust is rusted beyond repair came with no battery and the previous owner had not been able to get the bike running at any time. He had however rebuilt the carbs. Here is the bike when i got it





    Here it is stripped of tank and seat. you can see just how nasty it is



    Here is the tank stripped. I'm debating polishing this up, and clearing it as bare metal, or going with a hammered finish paint.. Suggestions accepted! Also on the second pic you can see how well the motor cleaned up on that side. Not too bad.





    My brother in law and i wanted to see if the bike would even work before i started dumping money into it. Well obviously it wouldn't work with the carbs open, so to restrict them we just threw some masking tape over the intakes to try to get the right amount of air going in. Then we could tune each carb by just bending over the tape. Super ghetto, i know but it worked for what we wanted it to do.

    updated, pics and vid. Could anyone tell me which petcock i would need off of Z1 enterprises? there are like 10

      You cant clear bare metal just so ya know. You need a two part coating. Cant remember what its called but its basically the same stuff they use to seal bar tops.

        decided to go with the hammered finish something like this, for the tank and side covers.

          Also got my V&H header repaired by a friend who can weld stuff. He dropped that off, i'll throw up some pics of that tomorrow. Got a new battery finally. Anyone have any advice on the petcock to order off of Z1? I would like to put in my order tomorrow..

            This is the header that i had fixed. Matt at Stainless Headers Mfg. did a great job patching the runners up.




            The header really cleans up the bike from the rusted out stock stuff that was on it.

              Look it up on cyclepartsnation.com or bikebandit.com both have OEM parts selections for the year make and model.

                lookin good! I like that hammered finish you thinking about using, you should go with the rust/copper tone that would look sweet . Keep up the good work, she's coming along! The bare metal look is pretty nasty too....just sayin

                  Did the hammered finish paint on the tank today. I had to forget everything i thought i new about painting.This stuff gets its finish by running, so you have to lay it on super thick. Will put up pics tomorrow. Put in newly refinished battery tray and new battery. Had the bike running open header for a while. Cyl 1&2 got hot on the exhaust pipe ( the right side of the motor) but cyl 3&4 were just warm to the touch...So i shut it off. Also the right side of the motor seemed to be sucking alot of air while the left side of the motor was barely sucking any. Obivously it was running open carb and open header, but still.Any ideas?

                  Also put in an order for new tach cable, brake master cyl rebuild kit, tank cleaner/neutralizer/liner, new handle bar grips and glue, and petcock. Came to 156 shipped.

                    Inherited a trailer that needs alot of work, new decking, new wiring, new paint, new tires, but it was free.. I'll post of pics soon. I wanted to make sure that everything was tight with the motor before i dumped even more money into the bike so i did a quick cold compression test. Numbers came out good 150-148-125-150. Cyl #2 seems a bit low not not too far out of range for what i've found on here.. Any feedback on that would be appreciated however.

                      the manual calls for compression test on a HOT engine, with wide open throttle.
                      in that case serviceable limit is 100psi (IIRC).
