I'll get some pics tomorrow, its a 5 metre side cover, looks great 5 metres away. I'm thinking of getting a litre or something of paint and painting it all at once, rather than spray cans and will prob end up being cheaper too but i'll still do the white line with a spray can.
I've got my eye on a gs450 which is local, waiting to see some pics of it.

Cool! Yeah I'm gonna attempt the proper spray when I get there, should be an interesting exercise...

Hmmm took it for a run and its still got issues, cut out on me and refused to fire up until i put it onto prime, so i say now its got carb issues for sure, going to pull them off tonight and see what i find.
Under full throttle it will pop and down low revs it wants to stall

But if that ticking really was your fuel tap... maybe it's not letting quite enough fuel flow, leaning it out and causing those issues?1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

Checked the floats today and they were way out, so it makes sense that it runs out of fuel when getting up it, will have to keep an eye on them thought as i only just did them the other day and the tap is flowing heaps of fuel.
Will put it back together tomorrow morning and see how it goes. Picking up a car tomorrow afternoon, woman is giving me a ford festiva... cant turn down a free car!

Cool, that should definitely make a difference! That certainly explains the symptoms too...

Bike is now running and idling, but still popping under acceleration and feels like its holding back. I have the pilot screw wound out to about 1.2 turns might wind it out abit more.
Picked the car up today, ended up costing me $90 to hire the trailer and put fuel in the tow car bonus is it runs!

Hmmm I think 2 to 3 is where they like to be, but I could be wrong of course... after today's effort and the first start I definitely know how much I *don't* know about ignitions and timing and whatnot...
So a free Festy that runs hey? Bargain!1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

i think standard for my bike is 1.5 turns out, but i find it doesnt like that.
The car was filthy its been sitting under a tree in a reserve since march, trailered it home got it off and managed to start it straight up, got some photos of it this morning before it rained, the before and after photos are awesome, its a really tidy car now, but its still a Ford... lol

Put the choke on as you ride to see if it pulls hard. If it does you need to richen it and if it runs worse you may need to lean it out. Pay attention to throttle position so you can tell what area needs what done. Better to run rich than lean.

I found two problems with my carbs, a incomplete seal between the top of the carbs and the cover on one of them, and the tuning, specifically at idle, being rather out in a bad attempt to compensate. This was a problem that somehow suddenly appeared and it is my fault for not picking up the original problem earlier. I actually had to replace one of the carb tops in order to make this problem go away, fortunately i have a spare set of carbs i could savage for spares.
But using the "maximum rev" technique, it turns out my bike likes the idle needle turned out 2.125 (2& 1/8th) from fully seated, even though my manual says to go from 1.5 turns out and go.from there.

I'm pretty sure the screws are set pretty lean from the factory for emissions requirements, so I suspect optimal will have no relevance to what's in the manual...1982 GS450E - The Wee Beastie

okay i took it out to 1.5 turns and its still doing it, pulling the choke on just makes it worse, plugs are black with a brown tip.
surely turning it in to under 1.2 turns would just be compensating for another problem?...
